Ship Newbie w/t a Zhengdefu Missile Destroyer
Posted by MartianGundamModeler on Friday, February 20, 2004 1:13 AM
Hello All, I'm normally on the sci-fi and armor forum but today I was in Hobby Lobby and decided to grab one of these Missile Destroyers [U.S.S. Ingersoll] by Zhengdefu. I my first real armor builds had been a couple of their 1/48 armors which I had found on clearance. I enjoyed them, so when I saw this kit marked down to $2.99 I said to myself 'why not?'. The closest thing to a naval ship I have ever built in recent times was the Space cruiser version of the U.S.S. Yamato. I had missiles fireing off the deck and the cannons firing. Won me my first [and only] "best vehicle trophy". Figured I ought to give another vessel a shot. Let it be known that I maybe an experienced modeler but what I know about naval vessels is next to nothing. Any assistance with this simple build would be GREATLY appreciated!
The direction in the kit say that the towers and upper deck are all dark grey and the hull is light grey [above the water line]. Yet the pic all show a uniform light grey color. What colors should it be?

The vertical (hull & superstructure) were "Haze Gray" (a medium gray), the decks were "Deck Gray" (a dark gray), and the flight deck was "Flight Deck Gray" (even darker yet). I get my colors from "White Ensign Models". As for the mast, They were Haze Gray, with Flat Black from the Stacks and up. The ships that served in the Persian Gulf had the whole mast's repainted Haze Gray. Good photo's of these examples can be found at www.navsource.org and go to the Destroyer section. This is a "Spruance Class DD". I'm not familiar with that kit, is it a 1/700 scale? I served on 2 of the "Ingersoll's" sister ships, the USS Caron and the USS Stump.

Thanks that was a great site! It's odd there is no scale on the box that i can find though a lot of the print is in what i beleive to be Chinese. It only give the models length [30cm] and width [3.8 cm]. There is a pic on the back for 1/800 scale U.S.S. America aircraft carrier. I already have found one inaccuracy in the kit in that since it is motorized it only has one screw and from the site you pointed me to it should have two screws. I still like it though but I can tell it is a "beginners kit" due to the soft detail. The plastic is easy to work with though I can tell this kit is probly not up to the standards you guys probly work with. i found this kit at Hobby Lobby on the clearance isle. HL and e-bay are the only two places i have ever seen Zhendefu kits. I still like their little 1/48 scale motor ized armor even if they are not the most "accurate" but look great to me. i'm not a "rivit counter".LOL

Glad I could help. Yes, navsource is a great site for reference info.
