I am building a Great Lakes schooner, and the hull is coming along pretty well. I thought it is about time to pick up some fittings, as I will be needing a grating and several other deck fittings soon. I went to both ME and Bluejacket, and was shocked to see how few fittings are now available. Much of what I need is not available! While I consider myself a scratch builder, I have never been a purist who did all the fittings myself. Looks like I must get in that mold! Styles of deck stanchions now very limited, davit styles limited, sizes limited. I guess scratch ship modeling must be a dying hobby.
I also noticed that the offerings of the two places were very similar, and it made me wonder- do they get their stuff from the same mfg? How many companies make this kind of stuff today?
My biggest problem right now will be brass railing stanchions. The only thing I found online were wooden stanchions, wrong style for the ship I am building (1870s vintage). Couldn't find proper style windlass, though I can probably make one of those myself. At least I saw a good selection of deadeyes and blocks.
