deck caulking

I am along way from starting the decks, but it has given me a lot to think about. thanks everyone.

Sharpen, or flatten, one side of the pencil on a piece of sandpaper. A conically shaped point, as left by normal sharpening, will do that. I assume the deck has recessed lines. I do the pin washes as described by Ed, and for raised lines the method described by Don works great.

I've tried the pencil trick, but all I get are a pair of lines on each plank's shoulder.

Paint your deck with your choice of wood colors.    When you are satisfied and the base coat is dry,  apply a coat of Future floor polish and allow it to dry.   Then apply a pin wash of your favorite caulking colors into the deck grooves,  tarred oakum gray or white lead grey.    Moisten a Q-tip with the solvent used in the wash to clean up any areas where the pin wash flowed too wildly.   Apply a final overall flat or satin coat to blend everything together

I have seen some folks paint deck black or dark gray, then wood tone.  Then a very light sanding with fine sandpaper brings out black lines.  Haven't tried it myself, but their work looked nice.  I just did the decks on my SR in woodtone.

Steve what I do is usea .03 mechanical pencil and draw them in if they are recessed.
