BHC SRN4 Hovercrafts - Swift & Sure - Airfix - Update
Posted by John Leah on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 9:44 AM

1Hello

In case there are any Hovercraft enthuasts out there, I thought I would post this onto the forum. I have decided to build a pair of Airifix SRN4 Hovercrafts that were bought online through auction at a nasty price of around £33 each as vintage kits. I first built the SRN4 back in 1974 and was one of my first ever builds - and quite a big build back then. I had forgotten just how bad this kit assembled and all the massive gaps that appear all over it. One of the models is the original first issue Airfix Red Stripe type boxing which had better plastic and clear parts than the 2nd kit which looks like a 1977 issue and has terrible sink marks and fogged clear parts - the transfers dont look too good either so that will no doubt be a challenge later on in the build process. Any way - I am aiming at building a diorama incorporating one of the SRN4s hovering off into the sea and the other stationery with deflated skirts - this part was real plastic surgery, very messy but with some modelling clay added it has now worked out well and is starting to look quite convincing. The kits are not finnished but here is part of the owrk - I will keep anyone intersted updated later on. Please enjoy.

a few update pictures from the workshop last night

The first hovercraft I ever saw was in Hong Kong Harbor in 1973. Are these the same type?

Since then, I have been fortunate to ride in the cockpit of a USN LCAC. Yes, I am also a big fan of hovercraft. Looking forward to more from your build.

John

I've got one of these kits (unbuilt), I look forward to your updates on the build. By the way, what are you using for figures and automobiles?

Hi Lee - I dont know if the SRN4 was the same as those in HK - I thought the SRN4 was used only in the UK but I might be wrong there - I will drop some updated pictures onto the forum shortly

Hi Mike

Thansk for the reply - I bought a bag of 100 NScale pre-painted figures off ebay for £4.50 that shipped from Hong Kong - these took about a week to arrive and will do the job for the interior - I shall have the roof half clear on the model with the figures so you can look down into the hull. The cars were bought as a bag of 30 off ebay (N scale again) for £3 in the UK - they are bog standard model rail type scenery add-ons but like the figures, will do the trick just to add detail.

I have the 8 clear plastic 1960's era cars that came with the kits which will be used as boarding and offloading vehicles on the diorama - I think they are an Austin 1100 and a VW Beetle

More pictures shoudl go up on the forum tomorrow

regards - John
