Need help on reference material and aftermarket for particular IJN ships.
Posted by New Hampshire on Sunday, September 15, 2013 2:58 PM

So I have a friend who is a WW2 IJN fan.  I managed to get him into scale modeling, but other things took over in his life, so he recently gave me his kit stash and paints.  So I plan on building them up over time to give to him sort of as a gift.  I have started canvassing the net for both reference material on this ships as well as photo etch kits.  The kits I have are all Tamiya 1/700 waterlines, and they are:

Yamato:  Obviously there is tons of P.E. Kits and reference material.  But on both points are there any "stand-outs" to look at?

Chitose Seaplane tender: Having problems with this one since the kit is pre-carrier overhaul as she was when a sea plane tender.  Most of what I am finding is for the carrier version.  Any help here is appreciated.

Yubari:  I see Aoshmia makes/made a P.E. set.  Looks to be a little hard to find inside the U.S., but still available in some places.  Any others I may be missing?  Also, reference material again.  I have gotten slim pickings so far.

I-16 and I-58:  All I have found for P.E. is the Tom's Model Works set for the Skywave series of IJN subs, but look adaptable to the Tamiya kit.  Again, am I missing something else, or comments on the useability of the TMW kit?  TO be honest the most important thing I am looking at is the cage style antenna, though other parts obviously would add to the kit.

Also, what about general P.E. kits for use like White Ensign's IJN cable reels and such?  Worth the added expense?  Other touches I could add to make things extra special?

Chitose is actually a Aoshima kit so check some of the other online stores for PE for Chitose because there is a PE set for the Chitose. Thing is there are 2 releases of the Chitose the early release and the new molding of the ship.

Nice catch!  I just looked at the box and noticed Aoshima's name on it.  Thanks!  The kit number on it is 504 and also has an item number listed as 01498-1300 if that helps to establish which version it is.

is it the version that doesn't have the cranes but has the midget subs on it? If it is that is the older version the new version is more detailed and does come wit some PE and a update set is also available for that and the new version has clear parts.

Hmmm, I did some quick checking and I think I do have an older version.  But this one does not have subs on it, just the sea planes.  No Photo etch came with it though.

Dang, your right, they did some nice updating to it.  I am still debating which to do first, the Chitose or Yurabi.  The Yamato is going to be way more involved than I want to deal with at the moment, and the other two should offer a more simplified build even with photo etch and scratch building.  Just need to try and get my hands on some decent reference material.

Now if you want to update the old kit you can go find PE catapults from Lion Roar to replace the plastic ones and the PE set also includes the cradles for the aircraft too. Skywave makes a aircraft set it is equipment for Japanese Navy ships set VI which includes the launch cradles as well as propellers for the aircraft. The 12.7mm guns are pretty decent but if you want to update them you can use Master Models 12.7mm barrels the 25mm guns you can use the kit guns or Lion Roars 25mm guns PE set which has the 25mm guns in PE form.
