1/96 Revell CS converted into the clipper Donald McKay

Another...I oiled the tween decks and will lightly sand and weather at a later time.

A bow shot.....Once the initial build up is done..I will add the framing inside and then the monkey rail.  Tomorrow I will finish the bullworks and steam the stern boards and bend them around the stern.

Here is a picture of the water base the ship will set in.

You never cease to amaze me Rob. That turbulent sea is probably the best that I have ever seen. Cant wait to see more.

My method for the rails is to tape a piece of trace over the top of the bulwarks and make a rubbed pattern. Then increase the width in-out as appropriate. Since I sand the edges to final dimension it doesn't need to be too accurate.

That is a good technique for making aft rail around the stern.  I typically lay a piece of paper (Thin) over the stern and trace the figure then cut  the rail.  Some times I wait till stanchions are placed...co you can take into account the inward cant of the stanchions.

Thanks Arnie.  I didn't just want a calm or flat sea...I wanted Cape Horn ferocity...and I needed to use expandable foam covered in dental plaster.  I experimented with adding cotton foam and *splash*...yuk.

I teased the plaster so it looks pretty nice all by itself.   I sprayed it with clear coat....but I just don't like shiny seas.  I like the white water shiny but not the green water , so I'll dull coat the green water, I think.

Thanks for your kind words.  Getting the correct opaque look for the turbulent water and the deeper water was fun...lots of shades and in the real ocean it almost appears as if you can see many colors...blue and green shades.

I worked on the McKay's Bulwarks and forecastle.....here are some images.

I added the rail and the waterways...and the monkey rail will be added after the forecastle/poop decking is laid.

A bit closer

Another of the forecastle front and the beams to support the decking.  The decking will go aft over the forward deck house and be its roof.

I forgot to show the forecastle sub floor install...here it is.

And the aft section and reconstruction of the new rounded aft.....ships is now ready for the bulwarks additions........

A bit more work on the Clipper Donald McKay...here is some lable saw work done for creating the composite strapped masts.

I banded them and made the wedges beneath them......to support the band at the exposed angle.

Then I built the tops and added the chain lift and then weathered.

Next I finalized the open ocean base..the McKay sits in.   Painting was fun...I have yet (In this images) to install the McKay clan figurehead.

The other side...note the *huge* wave she is climbing out of......with lots of minor waves dancing about.

I finished up the mizzen mast and temporarily set her in the model.

A bad closeup of the figurehead........I carved it from wood and it is roughly 3/4" tall...painted exactly like the original.

From the port side, the angle is definitely more dramatic.
