1/535 USS Missouri
Posted by Squatch88 on Friday, January 17, 2014 4:04 PM

Just got the Revell 1:535. Really excited to build this, I feel like its a right of passage from everything I've read on the forums. Does anyone know if there are any photo etched sets for this particular kit? I saw some 1:500 photo etched stuff, should be good size wise right?  Also, any tips on making the deck look like real wood? Its a pretty bland color scheme so I want the contrast to really pop.

Try Toms Modelworks or Gold Medal Models. I believe that one of those companies makes a PE set for that classic kit.

You might want to check out 'Scaledecks.com'  for a wood deck.

You can order an uncut sheet if they don't have that specific one for your model. The decking is real wood and less than 1/100 inch thick and I am sure that they can run the planking for whatever scale you specify.

I recently purchased that kit myself. I intend to modify it into a Montana.  If I cannot find a PE set specifically for it, I will use the 1:500 generic stuff.  Railings and ladders are the essentials.  I usually like to stay within 5%, and though the 1:535 is a bit more than that it isn't too far off.

Well scaledecks.com didnt have the deck for this scale, but the ones they did, well have I'll just have to buy one of those kits!

Don, I haven't had any luck and I have been looking for 1:535 specifically, keep coming back to 1:500. Rails and ladders are all I was really looking for as this is my first venture with photo etched stuff. If you find anything let me know!

So after looking at the kit and realizing the lack of a lot of detail I think I am going to try something I have been wanting to do, rc kit. It will still be a lot of work and I will be venturing into an entirely different skillset. Now I just have to figure out what rc equipment I need!

HI :

I see where you are headed .Some years back a friend did just that .Now he used one servo for the engine and the other for steering .I don't know what this entails ,But , I bet anyone at HOBBYTOWN in the R/C dept could help . The gear he was essentially FUTABA micro servos and a four channel radio .The motor (which drove all four screws) was a can motor and a gearbox .

I think it's a good kit for a beginner modeler OR for someone to wanting to try different things like you're about to do, S-88.

I plan on using mine as a test bed for trying some detailing techniques and mounting it as an in-water display (since the kit came with no propellers and its terrible shaping in that area).

Ya. This kit, while historical in some regaurd, will be used as a test bed for the RC conversion, and a few paint methods-(never really done wood before). Ill be sure to post some pics.

Current plan for the RC stuff is trying to canabalize a small rc boat I have, if not HobbyTown was the next stop.
