Interesting new release
Posted by jtilley on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 9:04 PM

Here's a nice surprise for 1/700 enthusiasts:  an injection-molded German WWI battlecruiser.  The manufacturer, Flyhawk, is best known for its photo-etched detail sheets.  I think this many be the company's first complete kit.  Based on the photos, it looks like an impressive kit - and reasonably priced.  Here's a link:  http://www.freetimehobbies.com/1-700-flyhawk-sms-derfflinger-1916-german-battlecruiser/

This one's on my list of future projects.  Maybe, with the 100th anniversary year upon us, we'll see a surge of interest in kits from that period.

For those not pathologically afraid of resin there has been a virtual Niagra of WW1 era kits released in 1/700.   Aside from the scores of vessels of all nations from Combrig the USN has been well served by Samek's recent releases.  In battleships alone there have been more recent releases than most people will be able to build in a decade.   For the USN here are some recent releases: (dreadnoughts) Michigan, Delaware, Wyoming, New York, Texas, Arkansas, South Carolina, North Dakota, and (pre-dreadnoughts) Missouri, Idaho, Mississippi and Maine.   Niko Models also has a fantastic selection of early steel battleships.  So, while it is nice that Flyhawk has released an injection kit there is plenty of stuff already out there if you will venture out of the injection molded rut.

Interesting!  That would make a good companion with the 1:700 QE I just received from Squadron.

I've got the Combrig resin 1/700 Friedrich der Grosse waiting in my stash.  It's a magnificent kit; the deck planking is so finely cast that my 63-year-old eyes can't see it.

But plastic kits do have some big advantages.  That Combrig kit cost me $80.00 - and Combrig is one of the cheaper resin kit manufacturers.  The Flyhawk Derfflinger costs $29.95 -or $39.95 for the "centennial edition," with brass barrels and a remarkable seaplane thrown in.  That, to me (and my bank account), is the biggest argument.  Also, lots of people find styrene more congenial to work with than resin.  Using styrene cement allows some adjustment time (unlike CA, which is almost the only adhesive that really works on resin).  I'm delighted that all those resin kits are on the market, but if the WWI centennial provokes some more WWI plastic warships I'll be even happier.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Wow, I've spent 50 years in a rut.

Dang!

I agree about the offerings and attention to detail of  the resin kits.  But it is nice to see something in plastic being offered.  Plastic requires a lower learning curve for new builders and are usually lower priced.

Back in the day, as they say, I had a pretty good set of the Grand Fleet and the High Seas Fleet for use in playing Avalon Hill's "Jutland" on a large floor.

These nice little models are sold by GHQ in 1/2400 as Micronauts or some such.

Here's Derfflinger (theirs, not mine).

A lot of detail in that micro-model, GM. Can you explain the smoke effect from the stacks?

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

about spending 50 years in a rut....

Well, maybe not a rut but not the most optimum area of choice! For the modeler that only looks for injection molded kits would seem that there was a dearth of models of early steel to WWI models in particular, that is, until you look at the whole market for ships and not just injection molded plastic.  What follows is a list of battleships, battlecruisers and big gun monitors that have been produced in all media recently.  The number of kits available is simply staggering.   You would spend several lifetimes building all of them.  Most of the resin kits are high quality, easy to build kits, a minority are every bit as bad to work on as rumor has it.  Reviews can be found on the internet at Rajens Kit List, Steel Navy and Modelwarships. Heck of a list there, coal burner!

No doubt resin is a great medium for this subject. I guess I would say that the only area that scares me is bashing one model to build a sister. Not too difficult in plastic- don't know where I'd start in resin.

Here's a couple more:

1/350 Iron Shipwrights U.S.S. Monterey- BM-6 Monterey Class monitor.

1/350 Combrig S.M.S. Scharnhorst, and I suppose Gneisnau. Armoured Cruiser sunk in 1914 at the battle of the Falkland Islands.

I happen to have those two in my stash.

Subfixer- that picture is from GHQ's website. I suppose they airbrushed it, but it doesn't look like coal smoke at the speed she seems to be making!

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
