Viking boat sail
Posted by gfuhr on Friday, January 31, 2014 7:29 AM

Hello guys,

I am very new in the forum and also new in platic modeling. My first
build was the Viking boat 1/50 oby Revell:
http://www.wonderlandmodels.com/products/revell-150-viking-ship/

I don't think I am going to use the plastic sail that comes with the kit,
so I was wondering if you guys can give me tips on how to make a
nice sail (and not made of plastic!).

Thank you

I am planning to make that paper kit and face the same dilemma. I plan to display it with the sail and yard lowered.  But this brings up a question.  When the sail and yard were lowered did they then unship the mast, or was the mast left up?  To me a furled sail is much easier to make.

If I'm reading the original post correctly, gfuhr is asking about the Revell plastic kit.  I started a thread a while back on the model I built from it.  Here's the link to that thread:  cs.finescale.com/.../1673852.aspx .

In that thread I explained how I made the sail out of paper.  It's really simple; all it requires is some high-quality resume paper, some paint, and a roll of Scotch Magic Tape.  (Resume paper, at least here in the U.S., is a rather stiff, cream-colored paper that has a visible weave, which looks remarkably like woven cloth on a small scale.)  I'm quite satisfied with the result - and it's held up well; I don't remember just when I built the model, but it's been several years, and the tape shows no sign of coming loose.  I'm comfortable recommending that technique.

Good luck!  That Revell kit is an excellent one.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Don't use the gurning Viking decal!

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

The following site has a pdf download of a monograph of the find of the original ship, with a lot of detail drawings of what was discovered.  Would be quite useful to anyone building the model.  Now all I have to do, is get one of the Revell kits.
