I may be wrong on this, but I seem to remember hearing that the entry way was not on the ship in 1805. I heard it was added sometime while it has been a museum, easier access or something.

I could be very wrong.

Well, now all I have to do is figure out how to do some carving. Anyone have any ideas on how I should go about it? Pattern, type of wood?

Check to see if anybody has plans to the Mamoli or other wooden kits on the market and see if you can get a copy with a side view of the entry port. Don't worry if it isn't to scale, you can always rescale it. Also ask on the Victory chat room http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hmsvictorymodeling.
Make it out of plastic. I use Evergreen plastic that you can get through Squadron Mail Order. I don't know what dimensions you need exactly, but you can get square and retangular pieces in any size. To make the curve on the top of the entry, heat the plastic with a soldering iron or tip of a clothes iron so that it is pliable, make a jig with three pieces of tubing about the diameter you need, and bend the plastic around the tube to make the complex shape that you need. Be sure to keep heat on it so it doesn't harden.

I've made a bell stand using this technique.

Hi Lon,

Peter Goodwin in "The Sailing Man of War . . ." page 192 indicates
that entry ports were fitted on all three deckers. He gives examples
of differing architectures for the same. These entry ports are seen
on the first rate models of the period. I was keenly disappointed in
Heller's goof in this regard and found it drained me of any desire to
build the thing. If I were to do so, however, the appropriate
gunport can be enlarged since the entry way was the width of a
gunport but was 4'6" to 4'9" high (also from Goodwin). If your
friend can fabricate a canopy over the entrance he might be able to
save the day. Hope this helps.

Checked with the Victory group, good idea, still waiting for a answer though but I'm sure someone will come thru. I'll look into the plastic but will probably have to pick your brain some when the time comes
