Looking For Arleigh Burke Class Model
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, February 26, 2004 11:55 AM
Hello,

I'm new to this forum and could use some assistance. I am looking for a large scale model of an Arleigh Burke class destroyer. I am specifically looking for a Flight I and not a Flight IIA. The bigger the better. All help is appreciated. I commissioned the U.S.S. John S. McCain and am looking to add a model of it to my living room.

Regards,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Exactly HOW big?

BaD Ship Models does a 63" model of the Burke in her Flight I configuration.

There ya go, that's the biggest one I know of!!

Holy Smokes!!! That's huge. I was thinking something roughly half that size. But, I'll definitely consider that one. Any other thought at something around 36" I do like that one though. Thanx for the link.

I'm going to have to think about getting one of a Spruance class.

Well Chris,

You did ask for large scale... Confused [%-)] the only other Burke kits I know of are 1/350 and 1/700.

You might want to try Loyalhanna Dockyard to see if they carry anything.

Maybe Panda's 1/350 Burke, Cole or Churchill would be good enough, not too small to be impressive, but maybe not too big to suit your size tastes. Anyway, there are a lot of model choices now on the Burke.

What do you guys mean by Flight I or Flight II etc? I love those AB's they are beautiful ships. Nice clean sleak an mean looking. They should have shark mouths painted on them.

"Flight I's" were orginal configuration, "Flight II's" had the fantail turned into a flight deck with hanger bay.

I bought Panda's 1:350 USS Cole and quite like it. Detail is weak and some of the rivets are way too big and must be sanded a bit, but overall the fit and form is a good foundation to build a nice ship from. It has etched steelrailings that are not so finely cut as GMM brass parts, but again, an out-of-the-box build will still give you a very crisp and striking model even without the fine details. The satnd really sucks, but who uses them anyway? I don't think I've ever seen a ship kit with a stand I'd care to use.

If you are interested in large scale models, you might want to check out my website, warship models underway:

www.warshipmodelsunderway.com

I am building a 1/96 scale Flight I right now, the John Paul Jones (DDG-53)

In addition to the BaD kit, Scale Shipyard offers a nice 1/96 scale hull for the class, which is what I am using. If you want to go still larger, there is a company in Australia that is making a 1/72 scale Burke hull and parts. Good luck!
