1/70 Ertl/Imai Mayflower
Posted by millard on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 1:57 PM

I'm going to try and do two builds here .We'll see how that goes.I'm going to do the Mayflower and the Golden Hind..I've started both but I'm a little further with the Mayflower. The kit is very nice as are all Imai kits. this kit was so good that when Trumpter came out with their 1/60 Mayflower its and exact copy. I know this since I build the Trumpeter kit.I wished imai was still in business because of the plastic they used for their ship models is the best i've ever used. You can treated as all most wood. I use stain on the coloring of my models and Imai takes it well. i've got the decks finished and I'm working on the hull. With help from David Kump I'm going to try to send photos.

Very cool, Rod!  This is a real treat, since I've only ever seen your models after they're already finished...it'll be super-fun to see your progress!  And I have both the Mayflower and the GH in my stash, too, so I'll be taking notes for my future with these kits...

By the way, I love your wood stain technique....I need to experiment with that sometime...what is the basecoat paint color on your bulkhead here?

I'm also following along with great interest. I don't have the ERTL/Imai Mayflower but I do have the 1/70 GH. I certainly can learn a bit about how you (and David) make the plastic look like wood with each of your techniques.

Great start. Keep those pictures coming!

Thanks guys. Great to hear from you Pete.David to answer your question.I use Model Master acrylic wood for the base coat. You Have to start with and Acrylic or I have found the stain will lift.Afdter the stain has dried for at least 48 hrs. I spray a couple of coats of acrylic flat coat. I have found if you use a lacquer base dullcoat it wringles the stain. I should say at this point too I have had a problem taping over the stain. The tape peels the stain up.I do my painting during the base painting period.

I remember as a kid, I built the old Revell kit of the Mayflower which sat on the mantel for a few years until one of our cats knocked it down.

I love the staining job!

Rod,

Looks like great stuff. Do you know of any plans floating around for this Mayflower? and are you familiar with Noel Hackney's "Mayflower" book? It was done in the the late 60's (copyright 1970). It was a companion piece to the Airfix kit of the same era. I wish I was building ships at that time. The Airfix kit looked like a real winner.

Keep up the god work.

Good to see you're back, Rod!

She's looking good!

Can you tell us more about the blending of the stern/hull parts?  Did you putty the seam, and then scribe over it?

Hi David

Good to be back. It was a long trip.I use CA gue to fill gaps around the stern and on the keel.Along with and accelarator.Than sand out after about  5 min wait.Wait to long and the CA gets to hard and you'll have trouble sanding it.I than use my scribe to re-do the planking lines.
