New releases from Trumpeter
Posted by jtilley on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 9:40 AM

Trumpeter has just posted its latest new releases.  The ships:  a 1/350 H.M.S. Monmouth (modern frigate) and a 1/700 U.S.S. West Virginia (presumably a modified - or unmodified - reissue of the Maryland).

Basket masts? Looks like it. I recently got some emails from one of the retailers regarding selling these things separately. Frankly at that scale I didn't think they looked too great. I'm holding out for someone to sell them for BB-39 in 1/350 scale...

Thanks for the notice, John. My understanding is that the theory was that they would, as geodesics, absorb direct hits in the form of a pass through set of holes, than tripod masts which were severely shot up at Jutland. But with the advent of precise optical range finding they proved to be too flexible.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

IIRC, there was also an issue of sturdiness after a cage mast collapsed on a BB after a hurricane.

Any word on when Trumpeter is releasing the monitor HMS Roberts?  Freetime sure has been hanging on to my money for long time.

I recently was told that it would be late April but I forgot to ask what year..........

I am looking forward to picking one up whenever they come out as well as the 1944 version of the Indianapolis

I email FreeTime because they were no longer taking pre-orders but are now accepting orders.  They replied that the model will be released late spring or early summer this year.

I'm still waiting for the Blue Ridge releases of the Montana class BBs that have been available for pre-order for months now. I really like the concept that they are going to take each ship of the class and depict it as it might appear at different time periods, from WWII through the Cold War up to 1991. It would be great to see the evolution of a single ship class, as well as variants such as 18" guns. I can't think of anyone else who has produced a series like this.

I have the Montana on pre-order also.  No word as to when it will be released.

Have you done a Blue RIdge kit before? Looking at reviews of some of their previous offerings, it looks like you get a ton of PE, as well as wood decks.

Best of luck, when and if it finally is available. Part of me is glad they aren't out yet, as I need to complete some of my stash before buying more. My wife has her limits!
