Any One Working on the Type IX?
Posted by plasticjunkie on Thursday, March 27, 2014 7:33 AM

Just wondering if any one is currently working on the new Revell of Germany Type IX/C in 1/72? I have mine that I received from Freetime Hobbies but I decided to wait for the AM goodies to come out. She will make an impressive build OOB as is.

I own it but have several to build in front of it.  Whats an AM "goody"?

Not to my knowledge Bish. Out of the 3 part Eduard set. I only see part 2 as a possible one. Can't really justify the price of the other two sets for the details it offers. The kit's details are pretty good OOB. Would love to see Griffon come out with a super detail set as the one for the 144 scale Type VII.

I haven't looked at the Eduard sets in detail. I am planning on getting the kit this year and will just wait and see as to what comes out. I am sure WEM will come out with something, which could be an option instead of Eduard. Guess we just have to wait and see. As you have seen it, do you think a wooden deck would be a good addition.

Bish

The only benefit with the wood deck is the see thru slats that you really can't see anything anyway and the plastic deck is really rich in details. The slats will be enhanced with a black wash and will look even better IMO. Eduard's set 3 are PE flood hole sections which I see no benefit as I will Dremel out some material in the inside and drill and clean out the holes. It's tedious work but adds tons to the detail effect. Set 2 has some beneficial parts like a shield for the heavy AAA mount and other small gun and deck parts that dress up the kit. I hope a brass railing set will be offered as I find the plastic ones could be a bit thinner. I guess I will be waiting too.

Thanks for the info PJ. I guess I will get plenty of practice drilling out flood holes on the Type VII. I am hoping I can get to that one next year so will have plenty of time to decide what I want to add to the IX, when I get round to getting it that is.

I too have all 3 1/72 kits to build and want to use PE and/or wood detail parts. In the past I have completed 1/144 u-boats trying to dremel the holes but i found it hard to do. speed of tool seems too fast at times and melted the plastic. was hard to no end up with slight kidney shaped openings. etc. any thoughts or tips there?

Hokey

Set the Dremel to low and take your time hollowing out the inside, lightly working the area not allowing the drum to heat up and melt the plastic. Then use a dill bit slightly smaller than the width of the flood hole, drill both ends then use a #11 blade to cut the center out. Clean up the holes with miniature files. That's how I did my 1/144 Type VII/C. It's easier to do in the larger 1/72 boats.

Just bought this model and the eduard PE sets. It's my first time working with PE and only my second model as an adult (use to build model airplanes when I was a kid). Last month I built the 1/570 Revell Titanic and loved the process so much that I bought the type ix u-boat because I wanted an even bigger challenge.

Not gonna drill out the flood holes. I want to keep my sanity. I'm curious about which paints to buy though.

Senor

Please post pictures of your build as it will be interesting to follow. There was color variation between shipyards and paint manufacturers so don't go crazy with the colors, just approximate the shades..

Started a new thread that I'll update as I construct the kit.
