Hello to everyone
I'm planning a new build with Revells 1/72 schnellboot, and figuring what paint colors to use. I don't use or have revell paints. I use mostly Tamiya and beginning to learn how to use vallejo model air. Does anyone know what Tamiya gray to use on the hull or a proper mix, or Vallejo, or even model master acylic I could use. Does anyone have any paint suggestions. Thanks for your help
Tamiya's Hull Red will work for the lower hull- it's not exactly matched, but somewhat close to the German shade. for horizontal upper surfaces, their German Gray will work. For the wooden deck planks, when new, they are covered in a black pine pitch- Tir firness, that weathers to a dark brownish shade of black due to the effects of teh marine environment. The sides- Schnellbootweiss is the name of the color, a pearl white. Model master did make the color in their now defunct Marine colors acrylic paint line. If you do find that aint and use it, primer is a must beforehand. White Ensign makes the color in their paint line. Or you can eyeball a mix from your favorite paints by adding just a bit of light gray to white to make the pearl white shade. I just finished a 1/350 scale schnellboot build here recently and used the Testors color, but it was pretty much identical to the white primer that I used beforehand aside from the smoothness of the paint iteself. I am not sure if Vallejo has a Pearl White in their line.

Stikpusher,
Thanks for the input. What if I add some flat red to the hull red... say 1 to 6 ratio. I have also seen photos of a all black antifouling paint. I'll mix Tamiyas lightest gray with white....just "eyeball" it, I guess. I'll create a mix of burnt umber and black for the planks? Again thanks. If there is anything else you can think of, I would appreciate it!
The DKM anti fouling paint on the U-boats was not black, but actually the same dark gray as the deck paint RAL 7021, not Black. But made with the anti fouling properties as the red brown shade. The Burnt Umber/Black mix for the planking sounds good. I would have to compare some Tamiya Hull Red to DKM shade, Schiffsbodenfarbe III (literally "ships bottom color III"). I will get back to you on that.
thanks for the info. I;ll continue fiddling with paint mixes. I want to do this boat on the channel or med. configuration. I;ll get back to this next week. Gotta head out of town. Thanks again.
Mike
I went and compared Tamiya Hull Red to Testors MM Marine Acryl Schiffsbodenfarbe III. The Tamiya color needs a bit of Red Brown added to make them match. The Testors color is just a little darker and a hit more brown in there.
