Battleship conversion within class
Posted by PaulK on Thursday, July 17, 2014 1:52 PM

Hello fellow modelers,

I have been searching for a 1/350 version of the Wisconsin.  Only 1/700 seem to exist.

So I was wondering if any of you could provide ideas on how to convert a Missouri or New Jersey into a Wisconsin.  I live in Wisconsin so I would like to display the namesake model in a bigger scale.

Any information on differences or sources for parts etc, would be very helpful.  Might be too much of a challenge, but maybe not.

Thanks in advance

Paul

You will be better off putting this in the ship section.

This section is for help getting around the forums.

Hope you can find the info you need.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Also a Badger (more properly, a Warhawk).

At what point in time are you building her?

During WWII the appearances of Missouri and Wisconsin were very similar.  One difference was the main radar.  Wisconsin carried SK and Missouri carried SK-2.  It's a noticeable difference.  After the war, Wisconsin received SK-2 radar.  http://navsource.org/archives/01/064/016464w.jpg

Other than that, they are very similar.  Others are more knowledgeable than I am, but I simply bought a Fujimi Missouri (1/700) and changed the radar for a WWII version; added the hull number "64".

Are you talking about as-launched or as she exists now, docked in Norfolk?

To make an as-launched  Wisconsin,  your preferred starting point would likely be a Missouri.   It has the correct enclosed square bridge.    The Iowa/New Jersey have an open bridge with round citadel.

In 1956, the Wisconsin was in a collision with the destroyer USS EATON and did severe damage to her bow (not to mention the damage done to the Eaton).   The wreck of the bow was cut away and it was replaced by the bow of the not completed Kentucky.    As a result the Wisconsin is slightly longer than the other members of the class.   She is often referred to as the WisKy.

To do that you will need to cut the bow forward of the #1 turret and add in a splice
