rc scale modeler going static good first boat?
Posted by hazegry1 on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 7:04 PM

Hey guys I have some experience building models but nothing as detailed as you guys. Most of my stuff you guys would call huge in comparison. I would like to do a model with some photo etch and fun detail. Can you guys recommend something that's maybe around a foot long or so? I would like to use one of the wooden decks I saw at the IPMS convention in va beach last weekend if that matters.

A 350th Destroyer or Cruiser might be a good start.  A carrier or battleship may be tackling too much for an initial effort.  Actually, I would advice omitting the PE and wooden deck for the first model  Use the first one to learn the basics of static plastic kits, then go whole-hog on succeeding ones.  Avoid the case like the RC aircraft guy who wants to get started with an RC B-17.

I was going through some of the modeling stuff I have and found a dragon 1:350 scale USS Buchanan it looks like its all still in the plastic except the two hull halves are joined together. There is also a PE set in the box.

Don I would think some of my previous modeling experience would come into play here, but maybe not.

Materials and processes are different, unless you worked with some styrene RC stuff.  And the detail, while not different in kind, is different in quantity.  There is an old saying in military, "sometimes quantity has a quality all of its own."  Practicing a new skill is never a bad idea before going operational :-)

Advice from someone who has lived in both worlds.  BTW, gave up on RC when I moved to a windier, snowier, and colder environment :-(

I have done some styrene models heres my little tug all the detail is hand painted I didn't use an airbrush for any of it.

I spliced the rope and chain together and the bit is made from wood dowels.

You are going to think I am nuts !

    I would recommend , being as how you are an R.C. modeler too , this kit .It's not easy to find But it's a great one .It's by Cornerstone Scenics .

    It's an H.O. ( 1/87 scale model of a waterline tug). You have the choice of building a standard tug or a " Tall Wheelhouse " railroad version .Best model that size I've found in 60 years !

You know,if you really want to do this then May I suggest another ? Try Lindberg's L.C.V.P.

It's a small kit but it's a lot of fun to build ( my thoughts anyway )    T.B.       P.S. I posted Before I knew you had done that .

By The Way;

       I do like your Carol Moran . I used that style hull for my R.C. Tug with which I won lots of gold at the Golden Gate Model Yacht Club meets . I like the way you shaded the wheelhouse windows  .Are you a graphic artist by any chance ?   T.B.
