It was a repop of an even older kit you can find it on Ebay a lot.

On the workbench: Dragon 1/350 scale Ticonderoga class USS BunkerHill 1/720 scale Italeri USS Harry S. Truman 1/72 scale Encore Yak-6

The 71st Tactical Fighter Squadron the only Squadron to get an Air to Air kill and an Air to Ground kill in the same week with only a F-15 http://photobucket.com/albums/v332/Mikeym_us/

Model manufacturers rarely condescend to tell mere mortals like us why they do things. I have the impression that Revell's normal practice is to squirt out a number of kits, based on projected sales; when they're all gone, management decides whether another batch is justified. If so, the molding machines go into action again and the kit gets re-released, often in a different box. Quite a few of the manufacturers seem to work that way.

Laying hands on a kit that isn't brand new can be frustrating. (Try finding a Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire IX on the web.) It seems like the problem has gotten worse recently. Another reason is that the manufacturers are churning out so many new -  and excellent -  kits that the dealers can't afford to stock all the older ones.

Bottom line: if a kit becomes available, decide whether you want it, and if so grab it - if you can afford it. There's no way to tell whether you'll be able to find it a few months later or not.

Youth, talent, hard work, and enthusiasm are no match for old age and treachery.

Unfortunately, I must agree.
I have noticed a change in kit availability since, well, certainly the start of the "Great Recession" .
Perhaps the number of stores buying kits has dropped and / or the number of kits being purchased has decreased because stores can no longer afford to keep inventory for years or decades due to a credit crunch. Two Chicago hobby shops closed during the last year ; both old and well established stores, too!
For my part, I have noticed the Renwal Atomic Cannon appeared on the shelves a couple of years ago.
I , and presumably others, bought it and the kit disappeared from store shelves until early this year.
Perhaps Revell decided demand warranted another production run.
.
I bought what may be the last George Washington kit on the shelves in the Chicago area as only one of the surviving 4 or 5 hobby local stores had it............I waited a couple of months but only saw the kit in one store. I do not recall seeing the kit on-line though I may have missed it.

There are maybe seven or eight Renwal models on the "bay" right now for a reasonable price. One Revell for an "astro" price.

Is Stanton Hobbies on N. Milwaukee Ave still around or has that shop also closed?  My father and I used to shop there a lot many years ago (1960s).  Great store!

Unfortunately, Stanton Hobbies closed their doors without warning in A.D. 2000.
Should have suspected something was up, though, as their stock was allowed to dwindle for roughly six months prior to closing.
.
My father first took me to Stanton in 1966 ;was a marvelous place.
All sorts of flying aircraft models hanging from the ceiling; dominated by a huge DeHavilland Comet airliner.
