I have determined to tackle the reissue of the Revell Monogram Bonhomme Richard Model. As a kid, I built the original Aurora Model with my Dad. Now I am much more attuned to the inaccuracies and will attempt to correct the most glaring ones. I am using the details of a typical French 60-gun ship of the period, which seems to be the easiest form to convert this kit. Thus far, I have cut down the forecastle and waist bulwarks to allow for an open waist with gangplanks. I have shortended the quarter deck rails and bulwarks, to produce a proper poop deck just forward of the mizzen mast as apparently Jones had the poop deck extended to cover the mizzen. I also reworked the head rails by cutting out the lower third rail and heating the remainder to flare them out. I intend on using scribed sheet to replace all the decks so I have opened up all of the gun ports. I purchased a Lindberg Jolly Roger to raid for Guns and deck furniture. After cutting down the bulwarks, I removed all the top rails and repositioned them on the lower bulwarks. I then used N-scale model railroad ladders for admiral's walk railings and N-scale model railroad building window panes cut down to three panels for the gallery windows. My intention is to maintain as much of the spirit of the model as possible while attempting to give it more of the look of the current research of the design of the Bonhomme Richard. Liberal use of wood and various shapes of plastic has resulted in the progress to date. Will post more as I go along:
Can't seem to figure out how to post photos? Can anyone help?
