Do ship modelers hibernate?

   I ain't hibernating . Just went into a high gear push on my client's ships . Cool weather and all . Plus the Museum is getting ready for holiday rushes of visitors , elections etc . And we are in the process of retiring three trains and adding three new ones , so it's track repair time too . I am still working on the Finn-Jet ferry from RoG though .

Wait till the rain (or snow) starts, you'll see an uptick ;-)

It sure looks like it was just one of those random lulls- traffic has sure picked up a lot.  Ship modelers DON"T hibernate.

I'm new to the craft, but I've noticed that sometimes I just need to think through what my work plan is going to be, particularly if I'm at a point where I'm doing something I've never done before.  Even if I'm not making much progress at the bench, I'm sitting there, noodling over options and turning things over in my mind.

I dropped off for a number of reasons.  Main one has been spending much more time with RC planes.  The other reason has been that I pretty much only have the interest in building sailing ships and spend much if my time over at Modelshipworld.  I do like to come here from time to time since this site is the best for talk about plastic models.  In fact, I hope to be posting some of my latest plastic builds soon.

I'm not -hibernating- I'm just too tired form building roof trusses to get any work dun on the " Revell 1/96 English Man O'War-reborn."

I'm experiencing a major case of burnout.Not to mention home improvements have the bench buried.I gotta get back in the saddle and put the finishing touches on my Kongo.

It can help, but there are still the occasional lawsuits over just linking to copy written material. It has to be a lot more valuable than photos, however, so I don't think it's a likely danger for Kalmbach.

I just realized what is probably another advantage to Kalmbach of requiring third party hosting.  I do not believe anyone has been successfully sued for copyright infringement for having a link to copyrighted material in a web page.  So in addition to reducing server costs, Kalmbach reduces their liability.  While to those of us who worked for someone else, Kalmbach may seem to be a big business, it really isn't. It is a fairly small operation.

For me, the autumn is a time when I have started a new school year and have less time to build as I get to know my students, adjust to their quirks, grade papers, plan for the year, etc.  As the year gets into full swing, I find I have more time to enjoy my ship building hobby.

Ops, forgot to tie in the "not necessarily a bad thing" statement. Essentially, they're not spying on you and building up huge profiles to sell to others. You have more of your privacy here. The cost is... well, you have a few more hoops to jump through.

For me the reason in decline in posting is the arduous process of attaching photos of one's work on this site. In the past I've posted pics of my work but it takes forever to wade through Photobucket  and attach the photos to a message.

Hey Thunder, I know you don't really care, but I"m going to try and explain why this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Kalmbach (FSM's owner) is hosting this site to try and get you to buy or subscribe to their magazine. Users hosting images on their servers makes it more costly to operate because they need to buy more storage space, and it takes more employee time to make sure things are backed up properly, etc.

Facebook, google, etc., those sites are designed to gather data on you to sell to advertisers. Hosting photos you take makes sense because they can learn more about you and the people you interact with. They get a much better return on investment on it than Kalmbach would.

Summer is generally not the peak modelling season in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.I speed up and slow down more based on how my mood is, however. Having suffered from depression and burnout in the past, if I don't feel like something, I just don't do it so I don't make things worse. I enjoy the hobby mostly and don't want to burn out on it.

"First signs of winter"?  Shoot  We're having only the third cold front of the season tomorrow (2 October) . Here in Texas we're only just now seeing the first signs of Autumn!  (Y'know, when Football, Baseball, and Hockey are all being played :-) )

For me, I usually get a lot more done during the winter months. Something about a rainy cold day and woodworking just seems right to me. Reminds me a lot of my grandfather.

I have 2 ships and a cross-section in various stages of progress... I always seem to work on these in the winter more than summer.

Ship 1: Occre Frigate Diana - I'm converting this into a pirate ship since one of my 17th century ancestors was a pirate in Greece. I know the time of this ship is different, but I don't care, it's a pretty bad lookin ship. Not to mention it'll look nice next to the 'History of the Jolly Rogers squadron' display I'm working on.

Ship 2: Artesania Latina Mistral - straight build.

Cross-section: Santisima Trinidad - minor modifications otherwise pretty much straight build.

That is not my build, but chango's. I was amazed by it, tho. I'd say scratch build.

But there are other sites were you post 'em directly from your file and BOOM they're on line for all to see, no waiting for a hosting site to come to life. I used to do a bit of posting here but life's too short (even in retirement) to waste time trying to load then transfer to this site. The future of online model web sites is in the instant picture post, the old hosting system is so 20th century, just my 2 cents.  

We have had an exceptional summer here in Oregon. Normally we get chilly evenings and bouts of rain that last for 4 or 5 days, but this year almost every day has been clear, hot, and dry, and the evenings warm enough to be outside in shorts and a Tee long after the sun has set, so I have been taking full advantage and spending nearly all my time outdoors.

Summer is definitely over now and I anticipate getting back on track post haste.

MrBill... gotta know what ship that hull is for! OMG! Scratch build?

Building models is fun but it would be a sad life if I ONLY built models.

I did finally find a way to include my kids while modeling though!

Anyway, summer is always hard on my modeling hobby because I've got so much else going on, but I usually get more done on my models towards the end of the year, after the "big chill" hits.

Easier to spend time relaxing outdoors on the deck barbecuing during nice weather. Going on a walk, putting around the yard, washing the car in the drive way, bike rides with my 10 year old, all take away from time available to do any modeling. When school's out, we do things with the kids.

During the winter and when it isn't nice out or when school is in session, those issues don't take up as much time and thus there is more time to model.
