Not only is the resin expensive, but the mold material, RTV silicone, is also.  And- the molds deteriorate after not too many pours, so the molds need to be frequently remade.  So, yeah, it is an expensive way to make a model.

One attraction, in addition to less popular subjects, used to be the fine detail of the low viscosity, low surface tension resins used.  However, new molding methods (not sure technically what they are) allow styrene kit mfgs can now produce that fine detail in styrene :-)

I am not aware of an injected plastic version of a Leahy-class destroyer-leader/cruiser.   The Gridley was a member of that class of ships.

Iron Shipwright makes a 1:350 scale Leahy-class,  boxed as the USS Halsey     See the link to Iron Shipwrights here   These kits are cast resin with photoetched details (railings, antennas, etc).  They are generally sold as whole-hull.  Geoff Cook (above) cut his down to waterline.  He also added extra details.

Resin kits assemble with super glue or epoxy.   They paint with statndard hobby paints.   Photoetched details are tacked in place with white glue,  followed by some superglue to firmly attach them.

At 533' long,,the models is about 18 inches in length.

Wow,  why are resin kits so expensive?    You are talking about a product which is hand made and in limited quantities.    The material costs are more expensive than injected plastic.  And, they are often the only game in town.

Hello,

I am also desparately looking to find a scale model of the USS Gridley DLG-21/CG-21.  My Father was a Doctor in the Navy and he called the Gridley home for quite some time.  Unfortunately, he recently passed, and I was looking for a model that his grandsons could put together and keep to remember their grandfather and his service.

Any advice would greatly appreciated!!

Best wishes,

Meg
