Hi guys-
I hold no illusions about the Hobbytown contests being anything other than a popularity contest....none of the subjects get votes for being quality models...it's all about asking your friends and family for voting support. And, since a prerequisite to voting is that you must *like* the Hobbytown faebook page, it's a way for Hobbytown to get a few new people on the radar who might see their posts on Facebook, and may, in turn, buy a few products. I love Hobbytown USA...it's my go-to LHS, and they have a fun bunch of guys working there, who know a lot! I've also been a regular contributor to their online Magazinem where I have a couple of articles, and a feature about my Black Swan model!
As far as other model contests....I wouldn't know. I do see how they could cause a lot of contention between peers who might otherwise be great pals. Even if I were professional-level model builder (which of course, I'm not, and have no aspiration to be)...I wouldn't want to enter any serious contests...there's too much *eye of the beholder* in judging those kinds of things...subjective judgement is not conclusive.
And I could see a tight-knit group of *Hobby-Snobs* displaying all manner favoritism...
Anyway, I'm not sad that I didn't win....I do think it's sad that some people take advantage of the rules...and I sent a message to a Marketing Coordinator for Hobbytown, and expressed myself.
I asked that they give honorable mention to the guy who came in second (I finished in 3rd, by a small handful of votes) and to please consider offering a second place prize to him....in my mind, he's the real winner.
Thanks, everybody for the kind words...and for those who voted, thanks for that, too!
By the way, for those who care...I've got several days off from work coming up, so I hope to have some progress to discuss on my current Golden Hind model!
Dave
