Zvezda HMS DREADNOUGHT 1/350

I built the Zvezda kit, and thought it was an outstanding kit. I used the Pontos detailing set.  I have been surprised that the Trumpeter kit seems to be capturing the market.  You should be able to build a great model with the Zvezda kit.  They have really improved their manufacturing lately and their new kits are fantastic.

Thank you Don, I smoked over both kits and for whatever reason, I found the Zvezda scaled out closer to the vessel and I agree, most do seem to sway to the Trumpeter kit.  I like you believe, a very good rep of this vessel can be had from this mfg.  I believe this too be one of their finest moldings so far.  I have seen both built up and finished and either one is a good choice for this Grand Father to modern battlewagons of the sea.  I will say, what I have done I have enjoyed with this kit and believe it will turn out very nice.  A labor of love one might say.

Thanks for dropping by Marcus, just hope to do as good a build as you have with yours.  I have become a big fan of Trumpeter's ships of late.  I have in the wings the following projects, just not sure of order.

Trumpeter Graf Spee........this is one nice kit in 1/350 scale.  Most of my ship builds are in 1/350th.

Revell Bismarck.......I just got this one and I have invested a small wad on goodies for it.

Tamiya Prince of Whales w/full Pontos Detail set.......that too was a chuck of change.

Mobus 1/72 SBN Skipjack w/G Factor Brass Prop.......have entertained the idea of RC-ing this one?

And of course current project.  I also have some others put away.

I just returned to building in plastic ships, I am most amazed @ what is out there for detailing them.

Come see me again, feel free to offer any help/advice you deem necessary.

PS:  I have a 1/72 Combat Models Type VCII 1/72, I have almost everything I need for that one, looking for a wood deck for it.  Has took alot of looking and eBay time to come up with what is needed to build this Giant Vac Attack model..........but will happen.

I also have the Trumpeter Graf Spee.  Hope to start on it by spring.  There is build of it on You-Tube by a guy name Guido Hopp.  He did a amazing job with it.  I followed his method of painting decks on my dreadnought.

BTW, hope this does not sound like bragging, but FSM did have an article on my Zvezda Dreadnought build.

Why looky there, I just so happen to be using the October 2013 copy of FSM that just happens to feature a certain somebody's build of the HMS Dreadnought.

Not to toot a horn for'em  or anything, but this really is a good source for study if one is building the Zvezda kit.

Had some time to play today.  I am using WEM PE f/this build.  For those who have never used their PE, you have missed out.  It is not cheap, but after you look over a set f/the vessel you are building, it becomes quite clear why the cost.  Also their PE is very thin, easy to work with and is scored for the areas that require bending.  I am one of those who are use to working w/thicker brass etch such as you get w/Edward, but after abit of fiddling with, you settle down and work is not too difficult.  I have been adding pieces to the upper deck sides of the ship.  Not alot done, but what has been done has made these dull parts come to life.  I also wanted to see how to use the Hold&Fold bending the chart house, best job I have ever done with a square bent structure and kept it flat and level.  All PE was assembled with CA.

Have been pretty busy w/work.......hope to post some progress soon.

Got the upper works together, whew........for those who have built the Zvezda kit already know what I am saying when I say, I spent about as much time on my knees looking for the impossible small parts that are attached to the upper works structure, this does not include all the items I replaced w/WEM PE.  But it is done!  Hope to get everything primed by tomorrow and I will post some photos.  It has been awhile since I built a plastic ship kit and I have to say, I am impressed w/the fit.  Very little filler needed to fix gaps as we use to have too do back in the day.

Deck, both parts and upper works has been attached to the hull.  1st turrent sanded for correction and for addition of WEM PE to add the missing parts.  Also checking the fit of the Pontos decking.  Hopefully, some paint this weekend.

I am going old school and will AB some, most of the kit will be hand painted w/lacquer paints.

So keep a eye on this thread and I will show you how it use to be done, you will be surprised @ results, main color with over coat of lighter shades, washes and filters all done by hand............

That is looking great. Zvezda's Dreadnought is one of my future builds.
