1908 SMS Emden - boot stripe?
Posted by 1943Mike on Saturday, November 22, 2014 11:42 AM

I can't (quickly, and for free) seem to find definitive information as to whether or not the pre-war SMS Emden had a boot stripe. Most of the images I've seen on the Internet show a boot stripe in both original and WWI paint schemes. However, I've read on one site (See addresses below) that the boot stripe was not on the original configuration.

Anyone here know for sure? I'm about to start some airbrushing of the hull and would very much appreciate knowing for sure.

1908 would be home waters. Is that what you are looking for?

Felix,

Thanks for the link. It doesn't seem to give me the answer to my query though. I know about the boot stripe from 1914 onward but some have suggested that there was no boot stripe, just a gray/hull red transition, before the war.

Still searching.

I didnt put a boot stripe on mine because I painted her in pre war colors. You will find pictures of her both ways.

wjbwjb29,

I'm seeing her both with and without the boot stripe, just as you say, before the war. I'm masking for the stripe right now and will see how I like it when I've painted the rest of the hull. If I do a decent job with masking and painting I'll likely leave it. If not I'll just eliminate the stripe.

Thanks for the input.
