Lady Elgin drawings

I did grab the Barton drawing.  Not perfect abeam, but closer than any other I have found so far.  I had already found the five others on the site.  I think the position of the paddles wouldn't be too far off if I used that drawing for the position.  I think that is the most critical element in the profile-  I think I could scale everything else from that position.

Yeah, I would like to take in both the Put-in-Bay Museum and the one in Cleveland, if I ever get around to it.  My wife wouldn't be interested and it is a long drive by myself, but still would like to do it.

I used to spend time on the Detroit River at my dad's uncles house when I was a little kid in the 50's.

The big ore carriers were really impressive to me.

Yeah, the bulk carriers (ore boats) are my real love and so far the only type of Great Lakes vessel I have modeled (all scratchbuilt).  I am trying to broaden out and model some  passenger ships and some utility vessels (tugs and such).

Don I know this is far from Minn., but there's a model, and a good looking one, over in the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society in Put-in-Bay Ohio. That's down below Detroit and over by Sandusky.

Probably a whole day round trip, depending on traffic through Chicago. Or a very pleasant boat ride.

Mom grew up in St. Claire on the, duh, St. Claire river.

Dad is from Albion, by way of the State House in Lansing.

Both were U of M grads.

His uncle my namesake had a place on the Detroit River and we used to go out in his boat and fish, watch those BIG ore carriers go by.

Funny how I feel all of this in my bones. Don't quite know why but it's a good subject.

That ship you want to model is pretty complicated.

That big arch truss is really something, I think a product of the Buffalo Shipyards.

Yeah, I looked through those.  The Bowling Greeb archives did provide all needed dimensions.  If I could get a good photograph or art drawing from exactly abeam, I might be able to do my own drawings, but all photos or sketches I have found so far were from quarters,

BTW, I used to get drawings from a place called Great Lakes Memories.  I have lost the URL, but did a google search yesterday and didn't find it- anyone know if they have closed up shop, or taken a new name?

Don the wiki article has a pretty extensive series of footnotes, more than usual.

Those are worth plowing through I think.
