Sounds like there was a block attached to those eye bolts for the sheet to pass through.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Jose

Olof Eriksen has some interesting insights regarding the 1815 rig.  He also notes that goblines (Brady says these are also called "back stays") should be rigged behind the dolphin striker to keep it from snapping off at the cap.  The Hull model does NOT show these rigged.  He also notes that Constitution was probably one of the very first US Navy ships rigged with a flying jibboom - which didn't come into common use until shortly before her launch.

Glad you've discovered Mr. Eriksen's book!

Constitution Jib Sheets - an interesting claim

Hi all,

I don't know if this has been discussed here before, but I found an interesting claim by Olof Eriksen in the google books excerpt of his book "All Sails Up and Flying"

I found a great webpage that allows you to view, zoom, and even download the aforementioned sailplan:

http://research.archives.gov/description/5956232

The sail plan does show exacly what olof states, that the jib sheet runs through eybolts on the spritsail yard before going back to the pinrails at the bow.

I'm thinking of rerigging my jib sheets and flying jib sheets to follow this line of thinking.

Cheers!

Jose
