USS Inianapolis flotation baskets

Stik's photos make it look easier than my imaginings--looks like 4.  Two abaft the 40mm mounts at the 02 level; and two abaft on the 01 just forward of the after turret.

I would have expected some along the top edge of the hanger.  That location might have been a FOD situation, though.

The floater nets just laid in those baskets, so that they'd float free if the ship sank.  This also meant that a wave breaking over the ship could float the nets out of the baskets.  Which did not endear them to crews or Commanders.

I have the Booklet of General Plans for the Indie that show the location of the baskets that I downloaded from the National Archives I could possibly email to you. Or it may be faster for you to download them yourself from the Archives. All you have to do is start a search with all of the information I provided in the first sentence. Best way would be to have a set of deck plans.

Second best would be to see if the kit has any big gutter-looking parts in it, then you could try that out.

Hard  way, go search the yard photos available and sus out where they go from those.  Since these were little more than bent sheet metal and metal mesh, they were often moved in the yards to better fit around various gear that had been moved or added.

A lot of effort for something everyone agreed was not very useful in an emergency.
