Help Identifying Vintage (C2-S-B1 ??) Model Ship
Posted by bpfish36 on Thursday, March 26, 2015 3:53 PM

When I was a kid back in the 1960's my father made his one and only attempt at modeling. The model sat on a windowsill in the basement collecting dust until my father died 14 years ago when I took possession of it. As this model was what originally piqued my interest in model building I have always wanted to refurbish it. It is in bad shape and was (sorry Dad!) poorly built to start with so I figure to refurbish it I will have to do a lot of scratch-building and/or get my hands on another kit for the same ship.

I always thought it was a 1/350 scale SS John W. Brown. However, looking at pictures of the Brown I saw this was not the same ship. I put a post in the General Modeling Discussion and was told Revell had a 1/400 kit back then of a C3 freighter called the Hawaiian Pilot. With help of the same poster I found this kit for sale on EBay, however, while a lot closer to what I have than the Brown, it’s still not it.

The C3 has nothing on the stern of the ship but my father’s model has a structure on the stern with two gun tubs and a third, larger gun directly over the stern. I looked online and the model I have looks very much like the C2-S-B1 only I can’t a model kit for that. I have picture of the model but haven’t been able to figure out how to attach them here. (The insert image button keeps asking me for an outside URL and doesn’t appear to link to my folders). Does anybody know – or can you help me find out – if there was a model kit dating from the mid-late 1960’s or earlier of the C2-S-B1 freighter?

I believe:

You might have one of the old REVELL  kits . Possibly an A.P.A. or A .K..A. From that time period . I can't say that anyone didn't make one , But I think the only one I remember is STERLING models 1/96 scale model that was for R.C. or display only.    Tanker - Builder           P.S. After reading further I do as the proffesor says , remember the " SARASOTA " by Renwal .

in order to post pictures here, you need to upload them to a service like photobucket. Copy the "link" from there into the URL box of the insert image dialogue.

Revell made an attack transport, based on the Victory ship. But it's unlikely that dad made it without all of the neat davits and landing craft.

Renwal sold a kit called the USS Compass Island "Experimental Ballistic Navigational Ship". But it's on 1/500 scale, pretty small. The distinguishing thing would be a helipad behind the deck house. I doubt that's your model.

To post photos you need to put your pictures on a website so they have a URL. I use photobucket (it's free)

This might be the Renwal 1/500 USS SEMINOLE (AKA104).  The real ship was a C2-S-AJ3.

Could be.

That's a nice kit.

BP did your dad serve on ships?

How long is the model? That could indicate what the scale is. How many hatches, masts etc.?

Renwal also made a 1/500 attack transport. The name escapes me at the moment, but it was a nice kit for its time.

Later - I remembered the name: Sarasota.

It looks like it could be the Sarasoa or Seminole - Renewal had kits for both. The model is 15 1/2" long. As you can see from the pic it needs a lot of help. None of the derricks, cranes, guns, landing craft, etc, that came with the kit are still there and a lot of what is there is damaged.

FYI, the C2-S-AJ3 was 455 feet long and at 15 1/2 and 1/350 scale this model would work out to be almost exactly 455 feet, so I do believe the scale is 1/350.

I would say that's a C-3.

It's the Revell Burleigh, a slightly modified version of their Hawaiian Pilot with some guns added.

It's 1/385 or thereabouts scale.

That's kind of a nice thing you have there, although its pretty rough.

I'm 99% sure it's the Revell USS Burleigh. The kit was a reissue of the Hawaiian Pilot, with some guns added. No landing craft, though.

Your chances of finding another Burleigh kit are slim. But Revell did reissue the original Hawaiian Pilot just a few years ago. That reissue shouldn't be too hard to find, and it would contain most of the replacement parts you need.

Later: I just googled "Revell uss Burleigh." There's no room for doubt: that's the kit. Click on "Images" on the search results page and you'll get lots of pictures.

John I think we're sailing in formation here. I agree with you, just looked at some images and an old FSM thread about it.

Thank you guys so much, I think we have found our ship! The Revell USS Burleigh was actually 1/400 scale, I re-measured the model and it is actually just under 15 inches (not 15 1/2 as I originally reported). The Burleigh was 492 feet long and 15 inches at 1/400 is 500 feet, so if my model is just under 15 inches that probably matches. Also Revell issued the kit in 1964 so the timing is right as well, and it sure looks like the ship. Revell did reissue the kit a few years ago but a quick search didn't find any sellers. Regardless, I now know what ship it is and will be able to do a better search for it. Once again, thank you for all your help.

Your dad seems to have started taking off the railings in favor of improving them. There's a 1/400 US Navy photoetch set thats been around for a while, but maybe not that long. If you care to, you might pick one up. It is made by Gold Medal Models and is geared toward the Revell flat bottoms, in particular the seaplane tender which really benefits from it, as well as a lot of generic two and three bar rails. It would really help this kit.

There's also a forecastle deck part missing that is important as its the entire deck and railings, plus the forward bulwarks.

A Revell Germany Hawaiian Pilot should be easy to find, reasonably priced.

USS Burleigh APA-95 was a Bayfield Class Attack Transport.

EDIT: son of a gun! Revell Germany reboxed it too!
