It may end up as a choice between artful appearance vs authenticity.  Most woods weather to a gray, so it depends on whether there is a large enough crew (as on warships) to keep the decks scraped.

I'll post some pics when I get the decking done.  It's going to be modified, with WW2 splinter camo and opened up for crane activity.  I'm calling it the Worlds first martime sealift.

Yeah, go find your plank and we can figure out what gopher wood is.

Tankerbuilder, I have it that you were a deckhand on the Ark, any truth to that?  Big Smile

I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

If you get to see the Cosby routine , it's funny . Part of what makes it so is Bill's rubber faced expressions .

Every time I see that America's deck I want to congratulate you all over again .You did a heckuva job , Mister !

Thanks. It's not my thread. The OP may choose to lay the planking, but jeez it would be hard to know how.

300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, 30 cubits high.

A cubit is the distance from your fingertips to your elbow. This reference in Genesis is a product of the Greek translation. It's about 18", so that's a ship 450 feet long and 75 feet wide. Incredibly small for the task at hand but if you and your sons set out to cut down and mill the gopher wood, construct the ship and do it all with ancient tools, it's no wonder that Noah was 600 years old when the flood came.

A note here. There is absolutely no cynicism on my part here. I respect the Torah and I am in no position to question any of this, other than to say that until the Bible gets to Abraham, supporting history from other sources is pretty hard to find. It's there but rare.

So they built a ship about the size of a Liberty Ship.

Plus one on the sand/tan color!Iused a custom tan mix on the deck of my Arizona. The contrast between the "wooden"deck and gray metal superstructure and deck fittings is very attracrive.

Well I haven't seen that question before.

Basically you can either make it look brand new, or make it look weathered.

Noah was told to build the ark from gopher wood, and that is truly an unknown reference. He seems to have followed directions as there was a positive outcome. otherwise guesses have been cedar, cypress or reeds.

20th Century war ships commonly had teak decks. Teak starts out light brown and ends up weathered gray.

Is the material plastic?

I prefer them weathered and use a base coat of light gull gray.

A good basecoat color for new wood is Testors Radome Tan, or Sand. This is kind of a mixture of those types of color:

If wood, clear Minwax on basswood looks great.

Creating a Noah's Ark. I want it to look like the natural wood decks by using lighter oils. I figure Tester Wood with Tamiya Clear Yellow would give me a bright deck, but probably too bright (works with propellers though).... What would you recommend? I'm looking for the deck color used by warships during the early to mid 20th century.
