Academy ships

I'm looking at possibly building the H.M.S. Warsprite by Academy. I have never built any of their ships and am wondering just how good they are. I don't know much about ships from this time period and the only other one I've built is the Mikasa. I'm assuming the Warsprite is actually a battleship even though it's called a dreadnaught.

I have built two Academy ships, and they were much easier to build than the ship I am building from another company that required a lot of clean up to make right.

The Warspite was always classified as a battleship.  She was designed by the same person who designed the Dreadnaught.  I believe she was the next generation of ships built after the super-dreadnaught classes.

I have the Academy Warspite in my stash.  The model seems impressive, very clean, lots of detail.  I hope to start on her by Christmas.

I built their Graf Spee and that kit was a very nice and easy build. An excellent value for the price. I have their Perry Class Frigate and the Warspite in my stash and both of those look to be even better kits compared to the Spee. Don't get me wrong, the Spee has its' issues, but they are easily dealt with.

The Warspite was a "dreadnought" era battleship that  was launched for WWI, saw combat there, modernized between the wars and had a truly sterling service record in WWII as well.

I recently completed the Warspite and used the Pontos detail photo etch and brass set and wooden deck. It's a great kit that I think you'll enjoy building.

Looks like I'll have to start saving money for this one..  Where did you get your detail sets and decks and does anyone else make them?

I got the Pontos set from Free Time Hobbies: freetimehobbies.com/searchresults

No doubt others make detail up sets but I didn't look. I've used and been more than pleased with Pontos so when I found it available I ordered it. The deck was part of the package that also includes loads of PE, brass pieces and resin. It's expensive but superb.

Sorry, that was the wrong link for the Warspite set. Try this: freetimehobbies.com/1-350-pontos-model-hms-warspite-1943-photo-etch-wood-deck-super-set

I recently saw the USS New York at Hobby Town and bought it on the spot and later that day was looking for the detail up set. Hence the mix up on links.

Academy also makes a "deluxe" or "premium" edition of the kit that comes with the wood decks, metal barrels, etc. in one package so you don't have to hunt around for the stuff.

I have built the Warspite and found it to be well designed, nicely detailed, and an enjoyable kit to build. I also used the Pontos set with great results.

The HMS Warspite was a Queen Elizabeth class battleship that served with distinction in both World Wars, earning more battle honors than any ship throughout the Royal Navy's history.
