DD-661 USS Kidd Decals
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 1:54 PM
Being from the Baton Rouge area and looking out my 5th floor office window every day at the USS Kidd, I am thinking about doing a 1/350 scale version. Does anybody know where I can get a USS Kidd model or the decals? If not, does anyone have any ideas about how I can do the image of Captain Kidd.

Why is she there? Is she out ot service, a museum? You are talking about the ones that look like the Spruances right? I know someone makes a model of one of them in that scale I think. I think it is the Ingersoll. The Kidds and the Spruances were the same, just the armament layout and the installations were different. You might be able to make the rest or rob another kit or something. Email me a photo or two if you can. Thanks. Good Luck.

HI paddywagon...
There are several nice models of Fletcher Class Destroyers out there.
Tamaya does 2 in 1/700 scale ( different bridges etc. ) and a fine model in 1/350 scale.
Skywave and others do Fletchers in 1/700.. And if yor lucky I think Old Revell did a USS Kidd a lon time ago. Most kits have several different hull numbers on decal sheet.
Good luck

Paddywagon,

Since you are from the Baton Rouge area, maybe you can help me out. I am looking for a print of the USS Kidd. Do you know where I can find one?

Go for Tamiya's 1/350 Fletcher, a great kit to build. That was my first ship model in the 350 scale. Learned alot from that one.

If you do the Tamiya 1/350 kit, you'll need to purchase the Tom's Modelworks Square Bridge Conversion set if you want to model the Kidd.

The Tamiya kit is Fletcher in her as-commissioned rig. Round bridge, forward 20mm guns, etc...

Kidd carries a square bridge, MK I 40mm mounts forward, MK II 40mm mounts midships, her forward torpedo tubes have been landed in favor of a platform for the MK 52 Fire Control Directors for the quad 40s. Her 20mm mounts are all twins with MK 14 reflector sights, not the early MK 5 ring sites.

With regards to decals of the Kidd's funnel emblem, no one does one to my knowledge, but you can probably find an online sample, or talk to the ship staff, and print your own decals.
