As an old coastie I wish there were more coast guard models and CG paint colors available. I am building a CG 36 ft MLB and am having a hard time finding the proper paints for this model. Does anyone know where I can find CG colors?
The USCG Historian's page has some excerpts from the Color and Coatings Manuals.
1916 Instructions for Painting Ship
1923 Painting Instructions, Vessels
1935 Instructions
1952 Paint and Color Manual
1965 Paint and Color Manual
1973 Coatings and Colors Manual
Lots of references, all give the same basic colors: white hull; black boot stripe; red anti-fouling; and spar (buff) color decks for the 36' MLB. The hardest color to find is the Spar. The closest match is Badger Model Flex Marine Colors Deck Tan 16-405.
Here's a couple picture of the DUmas kit I made into 36551. I used the Badger Deck Tan paint on this model.
Thank you for your quick answer to my question. I am bulding the same kit and if it turns out half as nice as yours I'll be happy. I see you left the bow well open, I never saw one that was closed. Everyone wanted to ride up there!
I actually opened up the bow well, and added the deck and bulkhead for it. I made several modifications to the basic Dumas kit. The short list is: made my own bow fender; opened up the scuppers instead of the sticker; made a proper grate for the coxswain's flat; added the bench in the rear cockpit; scratchbuilt the steering wheel (kit wheel was oval shaped); and scratchbuilt the fire extinguisher and lifering. I did a build log of USCG 36551 on another website.
Hi;
I think you'll find that Coast Guard colors especially the angled stripe ( when it was appropriate ) is one you'll have to mix .That's what I had to do on my Cape Class .
