Revell USS Curtis Wilbur
Posted by allan on Sunday, November 1, 2015 10:23 PM

Its been about a decade since I last built a Burke-class destroyer. I actually plan to build a Flight II model (for which Ive gotten a full PE set), but decided Id build a Flight I first as a warm up.

So this is the 1/700 Revell kit (actually a reboxed DML kit).  I upgraded it with generic railings and radar sets (supposed to be for the Burke, anyway).  I also replaced the plastic kit propeller shafts with brass ones.  And then some copper wire and stretched sprue here and there.  Im still a name plate short.

Comments always welcome.

+ 1 on the paint job and weathering!

I'm always appreciative of the skills you guys have putting together 1/700 kits. My Optivisor is absolutely necessary for me building 1/350 ship kits! I don't think I could manage anything smaller.

What a nice model, Allan. I recently built my first ever (and maybe last) 1/700 modern ship. I'm still recovering.

Those Burkes are pretty. I know a lot of people don't care for their lines, but I think they look good. The USS Stockdale was here for Fleet Week just last month.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thank you, Don, Mike, 1943 Mike and GM!

Mike,

My vision isn’t what it used to be, too. Takes a little longer now for the eyeballs to focus on small stuff.  But Ive been with 1/700 since 1983 (my very first model kit was a 1/700 cruiser), and I really don’t have much appetite to move to a bigger scale. Same with me building 1/72 aircraft and armor. Ive considered 1/48 and 1/35, but never really jumped scale.

GM,

Oh yeah, the Burkes are to me among the finest looking warships ever.  I saw the current USS Spruance (DDG-111) in port last year, and my wife was like, “why are you staring?”  Honestly, though, I think the Ticonderogas are even prettier.  First time I saw one, with those angled superstructures  and phased arrays …
