I think I'll do the same build... My grandfathers kid brother was lost on the Growler (http://www.oneternalpatrol.com/rothenberger-e-w.htm). I've been doing 1:48 planes since getting into building, so it'll be my first naval. I think I'll also look for a Shigure (Shiratsuyu-class destroyer) which was possabley the ship that depth charged her.
Hokey Aha! See, learn something new every day. You've prolly viewed this then? http://www.ussnautilus.org/undersea/gilmore.html

nope, missed that one. Looks like a 4"/50 up front and three 20mm mounts to me!
Yes, there was also the SSG-577 Growler. First sub to mount a Regulas missile launcher, iirc. Currently part of the Intrepid museum in NYC.
Problem is most of the pictures google comes up with are either unidentifiable boats, the wrong one entirely including the SSG version or pictures of models themselves. A clear case of "Google is not my friend."
I guess I'll have to check out Floating Drydock.
I probably don't know enuf about name/numbering - just thought searching for Growler would produce pictures of same. Are there more than 1?
Hokey I did Google USS Growler and found tons of images. Not what youre looking for?
I did Google
oops, yup I checked google too. Couple nicer ones there BUUUUT no numbers on the conning tower so how can you tell it's the right boat? :-P
Ok, I've tried Subcomittee and Modelwarship.com, checked Navsource (one grainy picture) and I can't find an answer.
USS Growler at time of her loss in 1944, what was her deck gun layout? I've got the Revell 1:72 monster I want to use as the starting point. The one photo on Navsource dated 9/44 "appears" to show her with a 4"/50 caliber up front and 20mm mounts on both forward and aft tower positions and on the aft deck. No visible 40mm's.
Anyone know if this sounds right?
