Need Help Finding Gun Barrels
Posted by cvsaylr on Thursday, December 3, 2015 4:08 PM

Hi Folks,

I'm building Trumpeter's 1/350 Dreadnought (1907) and I'm looking for either metal or resin gun barrels (both 12 inch and 12 pounders if possible, but definitely the 12 inch guns). I have looked at Model Dockyard (who carry a set but never have them in stock) and B+D Barrels (who have them in brass but are sort of expensive at $33.00 and I can't figure out how to order them from there anyway). Do any of you know where else I might look to find aftermarket gun barrels for this ship? I'd appreciate any info on this because the kit supplied barrels are wrong for the year according to Bill Plunk's article in the October 2015 issue of Fine Scale Modeler.

Thanks, Dave

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

The other place to look is Aber. i didn't see what you want, but you might have sharper eyes than me.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Dave,

I am building the Trumpeter 1/350 HMS Dreadnought also and purchased the Master Model set, which includes the 12" and 6 pdr barrels. The total was less than $20 USD from Poland to the US. I have purchased a number of MM barrels from Symon and he always has communicated thoroughly as to when he ships. It takes a couple of weeks but I have always been very satisfied with him and the product.

Here is a link to a set on evilBay.

You might want to check out Bill Plunk's thread to see how he dealt with the issue of how the barrels have to be mounted. You have to make sure you get them even and secured. I did the same thing as Bill to mount the 12" barrels.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Steve, Thanks very much for the information. As soon as I read it I went ahead and ordered a set (there were 3 in stock). I did pay attention to Bill's thread to see how they are mounted and had purchased the book at the same time that I ordered the model.

Thanks, again, Dave

Dave,

You are welcome.

Are you planning on using PE on this kit? If so, the Eduard detail and railing sets are priced reasonably and it makes the ship look a great deal better. On my ship, I have both the Eduard and Flyhawk sets.

The Flyhawk set is of the Zvezda kit; however, I purchased it for the hatch covers and a number of other pieces that the Eduard set misses. I also started scratch building some of the areas that Trumpeter missed.

I am not sure if my thread would help you since I stopped after painting the deck due to hand issues, but you can check it out if you like at:

Steve

I know that we would all love to see some pictures of your progress on this kit, so please post some!

Have you checed Freetime Hobbies online?  They have a tremendous selection of aftermarket parts for ships, includig brass barrels.
