Tamiya 1/700 Z Class... Decals?
Posted by Mopar Madness on Thursday, December 31, 2015 5:16 PM

Howdy folks.  I was given this little kit as a gift but have never built a ship, no less a Tamiya ship.  My only question relates to what the instructions say are the "decals" which consist two tiny flags.  It looks like they should have a swastica on it but I guess they intentionally left it off.  Anyway, these aren't like any decals I've dealt with. Is there some kind of activated adhesive in the paper?  Or, do I wrap the flag around the pole and use white glue to secure?  The instructions are in Japanese so I could use some guidance here.  Thanks!!

I've built two Tamiya ships and don't recall anything like you've described in the kit.  I don't think either one of them (USS Enterprise and USS (Ticonderoga) Shangri-La even came with flags.

Sounds like this might just be printed paper that you'd have to glue together, as you've said.

I've made my own flags using white decal stock, finding an illustration of the flag on the web, reducing it to the proper size and printing my own decals.  That way, you can recover the lost swastika.

I've had some WWII US Navy ships come with 50-star flags, obviously not right for the time period, so sometimes ya have to make your own.

Gold Medal Models has a Naval Flags decal sheet (http://www.goldmm.com/ships/gmsdflag.htm) that includes the German naval ensign.  It is a traditional decal, which may be applied to a bit of aluminum foil for body, wrinkled to your taste, and then gued to the flagstaff.

Thanks Rick!  That's what I need for sure.  I'll have to give that foil idea a try too!  So, do you let the decal dry on the foil completely prior to wrinkling it and gluing it?  Is it best to secure it to the foil with the traditional Micro Sol/Set products?  This'll be a new one for me for sure.

Yes, let it dry.  Absolutely.

You know, on these I have not tried the Microscale products.  But once in a while (I only need flags for 4-6 completed builds per year, so I forget some details) I have had one side go sproing and decline to be folded properly.  Someplace I picked up a tip to use a bit of Elmer's white glue , and I carefully hold it in place with cross-action tweezers while the glue dries.

Additionally, make sure the decal film is trimmed to the edge of the flag, and if there is any edge showing that is not the right color, I roll a brush with red or blue (as the case demands) along the edge.  And you may want to give it a shot of Dullcote if you think the decal looks too glossy for a flag.
