Welcome aboard Charlie. I hope to see some great photos of your construction of the Constitution. Especially the Scale Decks. One of the threads that GM linked is by Arnie60. He used the Scale Decks and would be a great source of advice. 

I have the Scale Deck for the Cutty Sark I'll be starting and would love to see and hear how you tackle this.

You are on about the ratlines.

As for the sails, the best advice seems to be to paint them light tan and then weather them. I'll remind you in a year, but when it comes time to attach them, please don't use a running stitch. it just looks bad. The proper way is to individually tie a series of short pieces of rope (called robands) through a hole in the sail and around the yard.

Welcome Charlie, I have been pluggin away with this kit for some time now.  I agree, there really is no need for anything aftermarket with this kit other then deadeyes and blocks.  The wood deck can lead to its own problems when getting to certian details on the deck.

Well, I do have my eye on the scaledecks wood deck. I like the look. I was contemplating that vs. trying to fill & mask the seams in the deck & apply a reasonably good faux wood finish on the deck. I'm also going to tie my own Rat lines. And I made the decision before I even ordered it that I would build it with full sails. All of them up. However as much info as there is on this kit on the internet, making the sails look real, or making the sails yourself, seems to be hard to find. I have a while before I'm ready for that though. But the deck decision I need to make soon because that gets assembled early on in the process. I figure I can test out the seam filling & coloring on the lower deck 1st before I pull the trigger on the wood deck.

Enjoy yourself, plan to need a few years. It's a very well designed kit.

My only advice- don't spend money on aftermarket until you get to the rigging, and that'sd a ways off yet.
