USS Whidbey Island (LSD-41)
Posted by airgunner on Friday, January 22, 2016 9:02 AM

Is there a kit for the Whidbey Island class of US landing dock ships? My son serves on LSD-41 and I thought it would be cool to build him a model of it.

I have to admit, I know very little about ships and have never built a ship model before. I will being going on a Tiger criuse this spring so I think I will have an opportunitly to take a lot of pics for detailing.

Floating Drydock has plans for LSD-45 as built and since the 49s are modified 41s (same hulls) they should work just fine. As far as I know the only real changes were all internal and to the well deck and vehicle/cargo storage. Just get a bunch of photos from Navsource and Navy Newsstand and you should be good.

Scroll down the amphibs.

OrangeHobby produces a 1/700 LSD-41.  It is a resin kit with lots of photo etches and it looks as if it will make into a really nice kit.  It is a bit on the pricy side.  Mine has been in the stash for some time now, I plan on eventually getting around to fitting her up as the LSD-42 USS Germantown, the first LSD I spent time on while on my first UDP.

Would you be willing, or are there plans to take enough pics to fill a DVD and sale as a model reference?  If so, put me in line for a copy.

deattillo - That kit seems to be the ticket. I was kind of hoping for something in the 1/350 scale but I guess a 1/350 scale LSD would be a pretty big (and expensive) model.

This kit would involve a lot of firsts for me (ship model, resin & photoetch parts). I plan mount it to a nice display that will make it look like its in water, something else I've never done before but this would all be an interesting challange.

Found a shop in GA (Free Time Hobbies) that has this kit for $69.99 plus shipping which seems like a fair (if not very good) price?

Honestly wasn't something I even considered (because I didn't know that was a thing)? Assuming I'm allowed, I will take as many photo's as I can and am more then willing to share them. Anything specific you would like me to get detailed pics of?

BTW - Thank you for your service!

It looks like a good kit, I've been practicing with less expensive kits to get the hang of resin and PE.  The cost sounds like a good deal too, I think I paid $85ish or so +shipping.  I jumped on the kit as soon as I saw its release.  I am attempting to assemble a kit of each class of vessel I served aboard.

Unfortunately, I was not bright enough - or I lacked the foresight to take pictures when I had the oppurtunity.  While I was aboard I never took into account that I may one day be building a model of that ship - that was years in the future.  Additionally most of time aboard ships was before the days of digital cameras, I was saving my film.  Fortunately I have gotten a little wiser, or at least I would like to think I have.

Taking pictures on ship was never a big deal, they never told us of any limits.  The only exception was the CIC where you were'nt even allowed to take a camera into.  I appreciate your willingness to share the pictures.  I dont have any specific requests, just keep your model in mind and whatever photos you take with that focus will be most helpful.  You dont want to get home and then find the lack of detail on the kit and instructions - and of course it will be the only area of the ship you will have no luck in hunting down on line and cause the most frustration because the only thing that will run through the mind will be "why did'nt I take a picture of that??!!"

Enjoy the Tiger Cruise, it should be a lot of fun.  If they allow you, dump your sponsor for chow (if needed) and dine in the Chief's Mess - thats the place to eat!  Best chow on ship.

The Orange Hobby kit isn't exactly what I was hoping for but it looks like a very good kit and is probably as close as I'm going to find so I went ahead and ordered it.

I won't be building it right away as I have some other projects to finish and want to build up my skills more before tackling this one.

The Tiger cruise will only be a 1 day (depart in the AM, back that PM). I got a mini tour of the Whidbey Island last year when I visited with my son but didn't take any pics. I will try to take as many as I can this time and will contact you when I have them. The cruise is scheduled for the end of March so hopefully I should have something for you in April.

Thanks

I too have piles of projects lined up, I'm not too sure when my amphibs will make it to the hobby desk.  Currently I am in school with that misery finally ending in June.  Cant wait till my weekends are'nt filled with pages of - we'll just say nothing related to my real interests, and then writing papers about those readings.  Fortunately I am in my final semester, after which Oklahoma State University will have zero say in how my evenings and weekends are spent.

Well I'm sure it hasn't been fun but I bet it will be worth it in the end and you can at least see the light at the end of the tunnel!
