Some years ago I built a Baltic area tanker called the Shell Welder. I am going to be refurbishing and modifying the kit. I am trying to recall whose kit it is. I believe it was someone called Eastern Express or something like that. Anyone familiar with a company like that?

I remember it - though I never built one. It was originally released by Frog. As you know, Frog molds have drifted around all over the place. I remember pretty firmly that this one appeared under the Novo (Russian) label; whether any other company ever issued it I don't know.
That's the best I can do. It had the reputation of being a nice kit. Good luck.

the original frog mold of decades ago has been done in the last 10 yrs by novo modelcraft of canada and eastern express

I originally put it on a blah base, and believe I did not weather it enough (pics I have seen of Baltic coastal ships show really severe weathering). I have decided to redo it with new base and really enhance the weathering.

It's not that good a mold showing now , BUT , It can be a beautiful ship . I first built it when it was under FROG .I used to buy them and build them as gifts for friends .
This little jewel is a sows ear , But one that silk purses real easy ! T.B.
Yeah, I was able to turn it into a fairly nice looking ship. But after cooling off from the build, I realize it looks too nice. Going to turn it back into a sow's ear (a full size sow's ear, a real junker).

When you turn it back into a sows ear try this .I saw one in Kiel that looked like it had been in a Demo derby .It was fueling ships around mine . Shoot , we were a big tanker , "we didn't need no stinkin fuel "
Now when I say big , I started on an original T-2-3 type right out of the Navy/Corps . Took the test and qualled for Chief engineer .Company said I had to sail as first assistant till I proved myself .
