In the event that a person wants to know what TRIPHENA means, the word is of ancient Greek origin appled as a female first name, meaning "Delicate" or "Dainty One". This name appears in the Bible, as St. Paul's epistle to the Romans (16:12) when he referred to a woman in that passage.

It's a good looking piece and it's amazing that it has survived this long and in as good a condition as it is.

That is a very interesting and cool story, Crackers. I love stories like this. It is a lost piece of history that surfaces shedding some light on something long forgotten.

Thanks for sharing that.

Before construction began in Philadelphia's historic district, archaeologists excavated a well and 12 brick lined privies to discover 82,000 artifacts dating back to the entire 18th century from a tavern that once stood on that location. Among the pieces located is an English punch bowl with a picture of the English brigantine, TRIPHENA, which sailed between Liverpool, England and Philadelphia. This little ship had historical significance. In 1765, she carried a petition from the merchants of Philadelphia to counterparts in Liverpool that they may forward reconsideration of the controversial Stamp Act, which taxed all documents on English Colonial America by the Royal Crown. By that date, the English treasurery was broke after financing the Seven Years War against France (1756-1763) and a similar conflict in North America, known as the French and Indian War. The English Crown believed that since its military defended the Colonies, the colonials should contribute their share of the financial burden. As we know from history, this was the starting point of American Independence from Britian ten years later. It's a shame complete plans of this little vessel are not available for serious ship modelers.
