How many of you are fascinated enough with the above named ship to scratch build one ? Now , I am talking say 1/32 scale or therabouts .
Here's the thing .The supplies needed will come from Home Depot and Hobby Lobby . The hull for this is thin - wall pvc pipe. Why this ? Well , it's easy to find and work .
In creating an ovoid shape you go and use a torch and furniture clamps and two boards The length of your sub . For pinching the ends you do the same only you have to be careful here . .

Well Tanks, if one is going about heating PVC with a torch, thats a pretty high risk operation.
As for the Hunley, and as a guy who likes submarines, I've just never had any interest.
Somehow she managed to sink three separate times with the loss of her crew.
Did you know that only two of her eight final crew were Confederates?
I wish you would figure out how to post pictures. it would be a real treat.

Mikro-Mir makes a 1:35 scale CSS Hunley. It has plating inside and out. It is set up to be detailed with the bench seating and hand crank (not included). You would need to do something about the bow & stern parts of the interior and the conning station & controls. The hatches are molded in clear so that is your only viewpoint unless you cut open a side.
This may be a preferred starting point unless you are into self abuse.

Actually , " G " I have had some luck with a torch and PVC .The main thing is plenty of ventilation and a pan of cold water and a rag for cooling the plastic .
Although I have read everything I could find about her I really thought the level of engineering was awesome for the time .
I was very surprised at how few crew were actually Confederates . ( this for ED ) But at this size the interior detail could be concentrated on to the point of workable features as a static model .
Simply , on the pictures .I cannot seem to find anyone in my friends list that knows how to use photo-bucket or is familiar with F.S.M.s site . The biggest problem is me .I need someone to sit at the desk with me and after I show them the picture sites , then have them show me keystroke by keystroke how to do it .
I did try some years back with EVERGREEN plastics and got two thirds done and had to move . She did not survive the move . T.B.

As Ed mentioned, Mikro-Mir makes a plastic Hunley in 1/32 scale, which would provide you with an excellent head start. Verlinden also made a 1/32 Hunley in resin. The kit came with parts for a full hull (solid) AND waterline version! I built the full hull kit but never bothered to do the waterline one. Any takers?
Although I am not a huge submarine nut, I do find early sub designs to be fascinating, as a lot of them don't look anything like what we see today. The Civil War spawned a lot of different looking subs and semi-subs, which would make interesting models. Mikro-Mir also makes a 19th century British submarine Resurgam, which looks like it's from a steam punk novel!

*EDIT* was just over on ebay and there is the updated Hunley from Cottage Industries, has the two guards, dock section, posable hatches, better fish spar. One was around $31/32 shipped. !/72 Resin, about 11 1/2 inches long.
