New U-boat kit coming
Posted by Archangel Shooter on Thursday, July 14, 2016 3:02 PM

I was just checking out some of the new releases by Trumpeter and they're going to issue a Type VIIC u-boat in 1/48th scale kit number 06801.

Hear about this a few months back. Most people were saying it would mainly suit the R/C crowd. A bit to much for me, i'll stick to 72nd. But i am sure we will see one here in time.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

That works out to what- 5 1/2 to 6 feet?  I'm almost thinking of digging the automotive paint gun out of retirement to do the 1/72 Gato.

Will be a monster, but should be a worthy project.  Be interesting to see what A/M stuff will come out for it.

How long before they release a GATO in that scale. Now, that would be a monster.

I saw an expanded photo shoot on this whale. 1/2 of hull is clear and with a total of 1000+ parts has all the interior comparment details to build as well.

NO

Why don't they do a 1/144 or even a 1/72 Milch,

or a 1/72 Type 21, or a ...

But thats just bad old Bondo. He'll shut up now.

Yes, that sounds really cool. I love the look of clear styrene in the morning. Smells like... 1 liter Mountain Dew bottle.

Not quit, I got the 1/35th Accurate Armor U-boat in the stash and she's measures out to 72". I call that one my retirement project when I can get around to it. But a 1/48th Gato should be close to six feet.

The Scale Shipyard has a 1:48th scale GATO hull in fiberglass: 78" (6.5') loa and 7.25" beam.  I've seen one of them a few times at the Carmel, IN Sub Fun Run.  I built the 1:96th scale version as USS HAMMERHEAD (SS-364), a Manitowoc built boat.  I ran the HAMMERHEAD a couple of times at the Manitowoc SubFest.

My calculator says that a 220' Type VII would be 55" at 1:48.  With a beam about 5".

So, it would be a tight fit on a 12 x 60" shelf.

Which is compact compared to that 7' shelf a Gato would require.

All of which pales beside the thought of a 1:48 Fletcher at 94" long (7'-10") and 10" in beam.  (You'd almost want a 1:48 I-79 to keep it company.)

Fellow Modelers,

I wanted to pass along that this model is now available as a pre-order from FreeTime Hobbies. The model will retail for $600.00 but FreeTime's pre-order price is $350.00 and includes free shipping (Continental US only). The expected release date is November 2016. The kit will feature 1,100 parts, 55 inch length, photo-etch details, clear one half side to reveal complete interior. For those who have never seen this kit, photos are included below which show a build up display at a trade show in January 2016.

...and yes I ordered one.

Thanks

Fellow Modelers,

Below are a few new photos of Trumpeter's U-boat, this time as a finished display.  it appears there will be a lot of crew figures.

Thanks

Shoot, I don't have enough stash at a enough value to even make a dent in that price. Especially for what it would cost to rent a Mobile Mini office to build the thing in . . .

I don't think this will appeal to a lot of RC submariners. The kit has a full interior, which means your're paying a lot for parts and engineering you wouldn't need if you're converting the model to an operational model.   (You'd be paying top dollar for a whole lot of parts that end up in the scrap bin!)

If they sold a "no interior" version with regular opaque molded hull parts at a lower price, that would really interest the RC guys!

I don't think this will appeal to a lot of RC submariners.

Additionally, clear plastic is more brittle and prone to breaking, which would make it more work to modify for RC and then more likely to have structurall problems over time.
