U.S.S San Francisco '44 radars
Posted by Greyhounder on Sunday, July 24, 2016 5:34 PM

Working on the 1/350 San Fran; and putting on the photo-eched radars. The problem is none are shown, or in plastic for the secondaries and find that hard to believe in 1944. All photos I have found of the San Francisco are unclear for them, anyonehave pics or know were the Mk22s mounted on top of or in front of the range finders?

Know they made some mistakes as the kit is offered for a 1942 and 1944 fit, and they goofed with the 44 version as the scoutplane decals included are for 42, no bars on stars.

Here is a picture of her at the end of her 8/16/44 to 10/17/44 refit.

And one in 1945.

The MK.22 radar was part of the Mk.37 Director system

it was mounted to the side of the Mk.12 Radar on top of the manned portion with optics

at 2 minutes into this clip, you can see one in action where the Mk.22 oscillates while in operation

One of my few beefs with that excellent kit was the directors.

Thanks for the information, the 1945 picture I've seen the other I haven't, but in it as in others I've seen the secondary gun director is not clear. Can only assume either it is mounted in the front of it or as hard as it is to believe there is none. Unless it is the small round microwave a antenna.

I have 4 more once I move to build, the Indy,Texas,North Carolina and Kitty Hawk, yeah also do some more modern 1/350

Well some further research lends me to believe there were no radars on the secondary directors, one article states the Mk 51 directors were used for both the 40mm and the 5/25s. Looking at the model and seeing the amount of, and placing of the Mk 51s makes me to believe this to be true.
