HELLO - I AM BUILDING THE 1:800 ACADEMY KITTY HAWK FOR A FRIEND AND AM TRYING TO GET THE HULL COLOR CORRECT.
IT CALLS FOR "AIRCRAFT GRAY" AND I AM THINKING EITHER FS 36495 OR 36473. I HAVE LOOKED AT LOTS OF CONVERSION CHARTS BUT CANNOT FIND A MATCH WITH TAMIYA, TESTORS, VALLEJO, HUMBROL, ETC.
I KEEP TRYING TO LOAD THE "ULTIMATE MODEL PAINT CONVERSION CHART" BUT MY BROWSER CANNOT FIND IT. IS IT STILL AVAILABLE?
WHAT P[AINT SHOULD I USE? PREFER NOT TO MIX COLORS. THANKS.
Cheers, Jake

Nuts to all but my Norfolk terrier is laughing
Jake- I started a thread on "Kitty Hawk questions", should be at the bottom of first page or top of second page here. Surface_Line made some suggestions on colors for her, as I am going to be doing a build for a friend's widow of the KH. He was a Phantom crew chief for VF114 in 71-72.
Might be a help, and he added a link for a lot of pics from NavSource.
Goldhammer - great picture for your avatar! Oops, I guess I forgot to check for prior post topics. Thanks for letting me know!
Hi,
Here is what I wrote earlier:
The ship was painted Haze Gray. In full scale, that is Federal Standard #26270, marketed as Neutral Gray by Modelmaster. I suggest that for such a small model that color looks too dark and you would do better with Modelmaster Dark Ghost Gray.
The masts and radar antennas and the very top of the stack was black.
Flight deck was very dark, and it weathered quickly. Do not paint it black. Modelmaster Engine Gray is a very very dark shade that is good for a flight deck.
Forget the reference on the instructions for "aircraft gray". That is neither fish nor fowl. Good luck on your project.
Rick
pathvet9I looked but could not find the link. Could you possibly post it here?
Thanks, I formed a 4x4 club called Wolfpack 4x4's, named that because of location and that the BLM Advisory Council I'm on was working on a wolf recovery plan in Oregon at the time. We also tought our Samoyed to "smile pretty" like that.

Don't forget that the port side of the islands on conventional carriers were painted black at some point in their careers. The modeler needs to pay attention to the time frame he wishes to depict for that paint scheme.

Billl -thanks for that tidbit. I am not very familiar with carriers and have not seen thaqt depicted. Could you possibly show an example? And what time frame?

Jake,
I will check that information after I get home from work this evening.
Rick - I looked more closely at what I have in stock. Using the Ultimate Conversion Chart, "aircraft gray" comes up as FS36473 or MM1731 (aircraft gray), or XF20 (Tamiya medium gray). The latter looks too brownish to me. These grays all get to looking alike in the neutral, ghost gray, etc. series. I have light ghost gray but not dark, soI will compare again at my LHS. Thanks.

How about MM "Ocean Gray" ? IIRC it is a little lighter than the Haze.
Well, I looked at acrylis semigloss ocean gray and it looks a little blue to me??
