USS Dallas, the SSN star of the novel and movie "The Hunt for Red October" is retiring after 35 years of service.

I think the Navy and taxpayers got their money's worth...

Actually, although the USS Dallas was a prominent boat in the movie, the boats used in the movie were really the USS Houston, USS Chicago, and USS Portsmouth.  It's too bad because the Dallas was one of the boats that I served on.

Yeah, just like USS Lexington played USS Enterprise and USS Yorktown in "Midway"... Its not too often that Hollywood gets the real ships to appear in movies involving them. At least it was of the proper type and class...

HMS Troubridge as USS Bedford in "The Bedford Incident". Look for the Lee Enfields in the rifle racks in the wardroom scenes,

You mean it was a flat top? Otherwise an Essex plays a couple of Yorktown carriers.

With respect, the US 688 Class sub used in the movie was USS CITY OF CORPUS CHRISTI. I have that on the best authority.

I got sent to the Dallas when they had their big drug bust in 81. The boat had zero morale, and guys were so desperate to get off they took a chance on failing a whiz quiz to get off. Everyone below E6 was working some kind of deal to get off. Bob Gregory Ruining one kit at a time.
