Question for the Small Combatants experts here
Posted by PTConsultingNHR on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 3:53 PM
Hello All,

I have a question, ...

To the small craft knowledgeable who visit here; please look at the photo herein and please, please, please tell me what color the boat is wearing, please? I know that the bottom would have been Copperoyd, but what's the color of the boat? I'd say a gray. Do you concur? Also, do you guys see any depth charge racks on board? For a time frame, most probably late-43 into 1944.

It's a 63-foot ARB (MSC Type 293) which was used for Special Operations. I'm having Kyle build this boat for me.

Thanks, T.B., I agree ... I feel that it's a gray. My take on that is base on what Terry Holtham (who wrote a two-volume book on the 63s with David Linley) told me in a private email and what Chip Marshall, who knows about Crash Boats (certainly more than I) told me. I just want to be 100% sure. Is she fitted with depth charge racks? I can't really tell.

Hi Tim ;

 Based on what I can see . I would say possibly , No . The thing is she could have some on the side aft we cannot see clearly . She definitely appears to have a rather large smoke generator though .  T.B.

I think the smoke generator is the same as used on Elco PTs.

Hard to tell what the object is on the starboard side just in front of the aft port fender.  I suspect the other item (just behind the box on deck) might be an air intake for the engines, as it looks to be more centered on the deck.

To me she doesn't look to have either roll racks or throwers.

Goldhammer, thank you. No depth charges, ...... would you like to take a stab at what color she was?

Being as it was taken in Sept. '44, I'd guess some kind of gray, or possibly a bluish/gray, but that is just a S.W.A.G.  Not up on any of that with the small boys.

Definitly lighter than the rubber raft on the foredeck, and I would suspect it would be a dark gray, or gray/black.
