Trumpeter 1/700 QE, Warspite, and Barham Has Anyone Built Any of These ??
Posted by mic53mlb on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 10:46 AM

I'm very interested in building a WWI QE class battleship and I saw that Trumpeter produced a 1/700 Queen Elizabeth 1918, 1/700 Warspite 1915, and a 1/700 Barham 1941 ( the Barham did not receive the extensive reconstruction that the QE, Warspite, and Valiant received during post WWI). I am a long time FSM subscriber ( even though I haven't built anything in quite awhile) and did not see a kit review on any of these. I had bounced around purchasing a White Ensign kit of the QE but held off ( now they're out of business)and then these kits came out. Has anyone here built any of these ?? If so what do you think ?? Does it need an extensive PE set ?? Anybody have pics of any of these kits assembled ?? Thanks

Just to let you know, my own answer is no. But I'd sure like to see someone else do so.

My only two bits are that I have built a good number of Trumpeter ships, and the color information they provide is pure crap.

But it sounds like you have a good handle on the info for these ships.

Lately I had a laugh; the F4F Wildcats that came with my Lexington kit call for the undersides to be IJN Gray. I guess so they can sneak in on those carriers.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I built the QE WWI kit (whith is identical to the Warspite kit, and need some small modification to be Warspite at that time period).

Also built the Barham kit.

Both kit are fairly good. For after market QE there's Artist Hobby's super set for everything, or WEM for a more basic set.

There's only WEM PE for Barham. Alternatively you can source generic sets from starling models of UK (for cranes, catapaults etc) and WEM or any company that do RN railings such as flyhawk/gold medal/lion roar etc.

My old post:

WEM PE has been purchased by Tom's and is available from their old website.

A review of the Queen Elizabeth and Warspite can be found modelwarships.com. The Barharn review can be found at Military Modelling.com.

A review of the Queen Elizabeth and Warspite can be found modelwarships.com. The Barharn review can be found at Military Modelling.com.

Could you give the URL of the QE review?  I can't seem to navigate the site well enough to find it.

The 15-inch guns are rather pathetic-looking and really ought to be replaced with turned brass ones.

I found the build of the WWI QE to be the most fun I have had on a kit in years and years.  The 15" guns needed work to reduce the extreme bell-shaped muzzles.  I found it to be doable with not too much effort.

Thanks guys, I think I'll pick one up, thanks for the feedback ! So, there's no difference between QE 1918 and Warspite 1915 ?? I have detailed books that specify that the rear top masts are dfferent between the two and possibly some other small differences ( that are hard to pick up in 1/700) like armarment (AA and smaller cannon).
