Hydroplanes ?
Posted by littletimmy on Sunday, July 16, 2017 8:59 PM

I have searched on-line and have only found a 1/48 scale resin kit.

Did anybody make a 1/24 or 1/25 scale plastic kit ?

As a kid I seem to remember AMT made one that came on a low-boy trailer but I may be "imagining"things  just because I want it to exist!

I know there are a bunch of wooden kits for the old Ferrari boats but I'm looking for somthing from the 1970s or 80s.

My father used to take us to Lake Washingtin in Seattle  every year to watch the races and I would love to build the Miss Budweiser or the O Boy Oberto.

Any help would be great. Thanks !

I want to remember a kit of Miss Budweiser of indifferent quality.

Memory is not serving to recall if in 1/24 or not.

I do not remember a trailer for the kit, though.

There was--if fickle memory does not fail me, a "ski boat" and trailer which might have come with a pickup truck.

Ok, went round to eBay,  Miss Budweiser in 1/25
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Miss-Budweiser-Unlimited-Hydroplane-1-25-Scale-Kit-Last-One-NEW-FS-Box-/222565682201?hash=item33d1f2cc19:g:JDkAAOSwaNBUeosW

A Revell hydroplane kit with trailer in 1/25 (I think)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/REVELL-YAMAHA-HYDRO-PLANE-BOAT-AND-TRAILER-KIT-/182641776429?hash=item2a864c572d:g:bhUAAOSwzgBY3QBR

Then, this unicorn:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-1960s-Chrysler-Hydro-Vee-Charger-105-Outboard-Motor-Trailer-Model-Boat-Kit/272762796584?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D44758%26meid%3Dc08ec147a1a045abb9699d6b15d049f8%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D6%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D182641776429

This is likely the "ski boat and trailer" I remember:

Unless it is this one (with El Camino):

But, could have been this one:

I love building those old hydroplanes, especially the Unlimiteds.  The Miss Bud kit  was of so-so quality, butcan be fixed up with some work. I did buy one online from a guy who started building one, then made mistakes, bought another for spare parts, and then gave up and sold it to me.  The big advantage of that was that I then had a spare Allison engine to use in a scratch project for Tempo V (I know of no kit for the later).

Biggest problem with that Miss Bud kit was the decals were not decals, but those stick-on vinyl appliques.

Hi!

I am sorry to say , I only remember the AMT " Miss Budweiser " Kit . I know there have been wooden ones , But , they were gas powered and about two to three foot long or longer ." Miss Budweiser "  disappeared when they had that flap about Cigarette and Beer advertising on Nascar items and Hydros marketed to kids  .

To me that's stupid . If a person , Male or female , is going to drink or smoke they are going to . The ads and other stuff didn't make me desire to . Nor did the Swastikas on the Bismark make me want Nazism in my life . It's history for gosh sakes . I have looked for over thirty five years now and have not even gotten a whisper of one .

If I found one worth having that wasn't toast , I would probably Put my old company Logo on it . Candy Green , British Racing Green , a Dragon the length of it with a star in his fore talons . Just for Dragonstar Inc.

Thank you CapnMac82 !  The Testors kit was  what I was looking for. I searched everywhere and never saw anything like it.

The price is a bit steep so it may or may not happen.

Apparently my search skills "suck" so Thank you again !

Yea theres a bunch of kits that got "censored" because children cant be trusted  LOL !

I suppose Goodyear  will get sued when a 5 year old suddenly feels "compelled "to buy  drag slicks !

Thats because AMT figured these kits would be used in water and they didnt want the decals to float off.

Academy did the same thing with their motorized  1/150 scale sub... and they still fell off!

Nothing special, I just put "boat and trailer model kit" in the search bar.

Then just sorted through the answers by rote (since there were so few).

So, no sweat.

I was just happy that my memory was not whacky.

No , CapnMac82 ;

You did not have a faulty memory .The AMT kit first came with no trailer but a weird stand . Actually it turned out to be the proper way to trailer one .

The boat at a forty five degree list on a special built rack on the trailer . You have to remember , even " Miss Budweiser " types were wider than a standard traffic lane between the lines .

Nowadays they'd use an escort and wide load signs !

Hmm;

I remember decals on my first one . Then clear coat with " Pactra " Clear . Trouble was the boat was a friend's model . He got sick and I built it for him while he was in the hospital .

It was more the ski boat and bass boat that I was not sure about remembering.

I remember wanting one of these kist not so much for the boat, but for the trailer parts.  Even though a Dilly trailer is simple enough.  Other than the keel rollers and winch.

Aha!

Have to tell you this though .The trailers on the Revell Bass boats reflected the trailers built by the trailer company or Ranger Bass Boats in their own plant for their own boats .

The AMT ( Ski-Racing-Custom ) boat had a Dilly type trailer but it was rudimentary at best .
