Tamiya Bismarck 1:350 WIP (Build)

Hey everyone, 

Here are pictures of more progress on the Bismarck. I tooks these pictures a while back but just hadn't gotten to posting them. Anyways, here are pictures of the Arado 196s, the lifeboats, and some of the superstructures with drybrushing and railings. 

The lifeboats still have some touch up painting to be done on the grey interior sections surrounding the deck. 

The air recognition swastika was masked using a little plastic ring I found, and then sprayed white using an airbrush. Then the swastika itself was outlined with a pencil, and then colored in using a black pen. Now that I look back, I could have masked off the black swastika and airbrushed, I may have gotten a nicer finish. 

On the superstructures shown, the wooden deck was placed using Super 77 which is a spray adhesive. It works very good, and seems to have good adhesion between the deck and the plastic.

I use a dark wash on the everything above the waterline plus some dry brushing or pencil on edges and things to give them more dimension.  I leave the rust for the ship's hull and the amount is based on the length of time at sea.  The more time the more beat up I make the hull.  Weathering is one thing I look forward to after a long ship build. It is hard not to get carried away.

I chuckle everytime I see pictures of the ships in Tokyo harbor at the time of the Japanese surrender and seeing how beat up all those ships look after months at sea.  You can pick out the ones that just joined the fleet after a recent refit.

I completely agree with you, I had doubts that the weathering I did on some superstructures would be realistic or not. But I found that the plain grey superstructures weren't too interesting, and I was willing to add a little more "artistic" effect in turn of sacrificing a little of the "realism" aspect. I think that when building models there is "realism", and then more of artistic weathering. For example if you search up Adam Wilder models, some of the results have unrealistic weathering but they look great. But yes, I do agree with what you said, that the superstructure weathering may be unrealistic. This is my first ship model, so I've been figuring stuff out as I go, but I'll know for next time.

Nice looking build but I am concern about the weathering you are doing on the superstructure.  I doubt if the Bismarks suffered that much weathering to her upper decks and structures in her short lifetime after coming out of a refit.  She was the pride of the German navy and would have been kept neat as possible.

Here is some more progress on the build, I am not sure if any are still following this thread since I got no replies on the previous post, but I will continue just incase. 

In the past 10 days, I've painted up the model completely and begun weathering with oils and some washes. The hull and all superstructures were painted with the base color of dark seagray (tamiya acrylic, and primed model first). The hull was then masked and painted with hull red tamiya, and then black/white for the stripes. The stripes were masked with Tamiya 6mm and then painters tape to protect more. 

I am doing the 1941 Rheinubung part 2 scheme for the ship, so the stripes conveniently stay only on the hull... without need to mask superstructers! The horizontal surfaces parallel to ground are painted with german grey Tamiya, this includes the flat part of central deck, and the upper surfaces of all the cannons (main, secondary, and the 105 mm). 

I did the streaks on the hull using Winsor and Newton artist oils (winton series) and then brushed/blended the dot downward to create streaks. Also did few dot filter/streak mix on some cannons and superstructers. This was done using Paynes gray, burnt sienna, and burnt umber. The faded red streaks on the lower part of hull (painted hull red) were done with cadmium red oil paint. 

Lastly, washes were used in some of the air vents etc... to bring out detail. Some of the floodlights aren't painted yet, that's why the glass is still grey (also the 2 aa guns arent painted yet, just put in place).

Please tell me if the pictures do not work for you, if so I will post another using post image (I tested it out and it worked on my computer - both flickr and postimage).

Hello again, 

Here is the progress from this past week of working on the ship. I've pretty much finished the main assembly of the ship's superstructures. None of the superstructures are actually glued onto the ship, they will be painted separately. I will add on all the AA guns, deck details, searchlight covers, railings, lifeboats, and seaplanes after I paint and add the wooden deck, just so handling and painting can be done easier. 

I am currently working on the assembly of the lifeboats and seaplanes, and once that's all done I can begin painting the model. I also have a little cleanup to do on the superstructures.

Apologize for the photos, they aren't the best this time... I will be switching to a proper camera instead of my phone.

Well, this is my first WIP thread I'll be doing on the forums. This thread is for my Tamiya 1:350 Bismarck build, kit #78001. This is the older Tamiya Bismarck kit from the 70s which I got for a solid price at a model show. Along with it I bought a small photo etch set; Tom's Modelworks #3512, and a wooden deck from ebay.

The bridge has only been built with the main structures, AA armament, railing, and other detail will go on after painting, over the wooden deck.

I still can't see any pics here. Tried to open the links on the first post also with no result either.

 

Griffin and GlennH were able to see the updated Flikr pictures, and seems to me as if people were also able to see the google photos album before that. Is there anything showing up on my first post? Maybe a link without the photo, or an empty space with no image? I am not sure why that's happening. If there are any others who the photos aren't showing up for maybe they know. I will post some more progress photos later on today, hopefully they will show up for you.

Thanks for the info Kien. I'll definitely try some of that ribbon epoxy. Pictures look great.

Griffin and Stikpusher, I went ahead and used Flickr to host the photos directly on the forum. Took some fiddling around but was worth it, you should be able to see photos on the forum now. Also, Griffin, the 2 part epoxy is nice, you can work with it easily for an hour, after that it starts to get little harder. You can freeze it to work with it later, but won't be as pliable as it first started. Dries after 4-5 hours to a hard finish. I'd use small strips at a time not to waste any.

Are we talking pics or videos? I think people like to see the pics in the thread but a link to a video is understandable. By pics directly I mean through a third party host not a link you have to click. I am aware you cannot post pics directly without a hosting site.

Whats much frowned upon is this site hosting the photos directly, a la Facebook or Scalemates, which both allow uploads directly. This site, like many others, requires an image hosting site. And the PB extortion caper showed the weak spot of that situation.

Im not much for one to follow links to look at photos or videos of builds. I'll bet there are more like that on here besides myself.

I'm not much of a ship guy, built one ww1 torpedo boat, but I thought your video was informative and well produced. Those bags looked great and that 2 part ribbon epoxy seems like some nice stuff. It's pliable for a few hours? IMO I think you need to figure out how to post pics directly so you can see your pics on the thread and don't have to use a link. Just my opinion. Keep up the good work bud.

Here is the link to the google photos album, and please tell me if there are issues accessing it with the link. If so I will create a flickr or photobucket account to get the image to directly show up on the page. 

Model looks great so far. That's a nice kit too.
