Muffler color on PT Boats
Posted by Bob H on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 3:30 PM

I am building Revlls PT-109 with a lot of photoetch and scratch building. I would like it accurate as I am able, so should the mufflers be the same color as the boat. Should there be any rust on them.

They were the hull color. Eventually some rust would form.

Google "PT Boat muffler details" for some pictures.

Edit:

I see that you found the PT Boat Forum and got a direct answer. I stand corrected on the rust since the mufflers were made out of copper. That is a great site by the way.

Too many models to build, not enough time in a lifetime!!

was the boat in service or just about to go into service? if in service then the paint would have been burnt off the mufflers due to engine heat. if going into service the paint would probably be same color as hull.

It's also important to remember the PTs had dual exhausts--in low and cruise speed the exhasurt was trunked into the water.  That water immersion helped keep the pipes cool. preventing heat corrosion.

At high speeds, the mufflers were bypasses to direct venting.

So, they did not have much reason to rust, or, for that matter, weather, beyond being salt spray.
